Santa Clara County District 4 Budget Town Hall on YouTube

County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg's in-person Community Town Hall on the County's Budget is now available on YouTube.

Held on Wednesday, May 27th at Campbell Library, the Supervisor discussed the County's budget challenges, potential solutions, and impacts for those who rely on the County's safety net programs.

Restoration of Virtual Public Comment at City Council Meetings

Starting with the Final Public Budget Hearing on Monday, June 8th, City Council meetings will once again include the option for virtual public comment.

From March, 2020 to February 2024, the City allowed remote public participation for City Council and all City Commission meetings. After a rash of 'Zoom bombing' and hate speech incidents, the City cancelled remote participation. Now, in anticipation of a new state law taking effect on July 1st, that option has been restored.

Initially, public comment will be available via Zoom. Comment times will be limited to one minute per person, and will be called in the order that participants use the 'Raise Hand' feature in Zoom.

Later this summer, the City will transition to a different software platform designed specifically for public meetings.

While the reintroduction of virtual public comment will reduce *all* public comment to sixty seconds per person, restoring the ability to comment virtually will benefit those who cannot otherwise spend weekday afternoons in the Council chambers.

The Alameda Business Association will hold its Annual Meeting this Thursday, June 4th.

San Jose Half Marathon on Sunday, May 31st

The San Jose Half Marathon & 8K is next Sunday, May 31st. As in previous years, the course travels through the neighborhood, with the usual parking restrictions and street closures

Among the closures are The Alameda and Naglee Ave, both of which will be closed from 6:30 am - 11:00 am.

Please note that there are no designated places where vehicles can cross the race route. The closure is absolute, with the closure notice recommending that residents use Hwy 880 or Hwy 87 to cross the route.

High School Graduations in Municipal Rose Garden

In keeping with tradition, the San José Unified School District will host its high school graduation ceremonies in the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden on Wednesday, May 27th, and Thursday, May 28th.

Given the inevitable increase in traffic and parking complications, those not attending graduation ceremonies may want to avoid that part of Naglee Avenue tomorrow.

Early Voting Starts Saturday, May 23rd

Vote centers open in Santa Clara County today, Saturday, May 23rd, for the June 2, 2026 Primary Election. You can choose to vote using a drop box, at a vote center, or by mail.

If you are dropping off your completed ballot, you can do so at a secure official drop box, polling location, vote center, or county elections office by 8:00 pm on Election Day. Completed ballots must be returned in the sealed, signed ballot envelope. To find your nearest vote center or drop box, visit https://caearlyvoting.sos.ca.gov/

To vote in person, you can find your polling place at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place

To vote by mail, your completed ballot must be returned in a sealed, signed ballot envelope. It must be postmarked on or before Election Day (June 2nd) and received no later than June 9th.

San Jose Recycling Guidelines

By their own admission, San Jose's recycling guidelines can be confusing, and seem to change regularly.

These are the three questions to ask yourself:
1. Is it recyclable plastic #1-5 or #7? #6 and items labeled compostable are not recyclable.

2. Has it been emptied and scraped? No food, no liquid.

3. Is it recyclable? Look it up at https://sanjoserecycles.org/

The Shasta Hanchett Park Neighborhood Association (SHPNA) Board of Directors will host its monthly Meeting on Wednesday, May 27th. In addition to scheduled updates from San Jose Police Department, Councilmember Michael Mulcahy, and County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, the Board will discuss recent Planning and Land Use updates and upcoming events like the Rose, White and Blue 4th of July Parade and National Night Out.
