Today, the County of Santa Clara, California Board of Supervisors officially declared October Burn Awareness and Survivor Month, recognizing burn survivors, the importance of burn awareness and prevention, and the dedicated teams who provide lifesaving burn care in our community.

Thank you to County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg for presenting the proclamation and helping bring greater recognition to the needs and experiences of burn survivors.

SCVMC Burn Center staff joined San José Fire Department firefighters and SJFD Battalion Chief Dan Vega for the recognition, bringing together those who care for and support burn patients from the moment of injury through recovery.

Michael Van Every spoke about the work of the SCVMC Burn Center and the Michael Van Every Burn Fund, while burn survivor Rhea shared what this recognition means to her and the survivor community.

This proclamation is an important reminder that support for burn survivors extends far beyond the moment of injury. The Michael Van Every Burn Fund helps strengthen that support by providing resources for the SCVMC Burn Center and the patients and survivors it serves.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is home to one of only two verified Burn Centers in the Bay Area—and the only one combined with a Level 1 trauma center.

Last year, the team performed 334 burn operations and 270 pediatric wound treatments, while caring for an average of 15 patients a day in a facility with just eight ICU beds.

Now, a new state-of-the-art Burn Center is under construction. Michael Elliott recently visited the site for a firsthand look at what’s being built and what it will mean for burn care across our region.
