The Creekside School

The Creekside School The Creekside School (TCS) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 private special education school for autism.

Our program is highly individualized to each student’s specific profile, where the goal for all students is to gain greater independence through the development of:
• Communication
• Positive behaviors/Self-regulation
• Relationships with others/social skills
• Community skills
• Functional Academic Skills

Using an eclectic, interdisciplinary approach, our philosophical foundation is based in the

DIR®/Floortime™ model. Though this model was originally intended for young children in clinical and/or home-based settings, TCS uses the principles of DIR® and Floortime™ within a curriculum appropriate for a school environment serving students at the elementary and middle school level. The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR®/Floortime™) model is a framework that helps clinicians, parents and educators develop intervention programs tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental challenges. For more information on DIR®/ Floortime™, please visit
icdl.com or profectum.org

Part of using the DIR® framework includes individualizing each student’s educational program. This approach enables us to infuse components of a variety of educational and therapeutic interventions, including but not limited to: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), SCERTS® (focusing on Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Support), Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), and/or Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®), adapted to the individual needs of each student.

"If Creekside wasn’t in our lives, I don’t know that my son would have achieved the milestones he has..."

Before finding The Creekside School, so many parents tell us they felt unseen, exhausted, and stuck in traditional school programs that just didn’t understand their child.

Parents of Creekside students share what changed when they found a community built on patience, trust, and understanding:

✨ Individualized Learning: Low student-to-teacher ratios that meet every child right where they are.
✨ Real-World Confidence: From learning how to swim to confidently walking into Target or ordering their own drink at Starbucks.
✨ Unlocking Communication: Persistence with AAC devices and tailored tools so students can express what they need and love.
✨ True Belonging: Giving students friends, independence, and a genuine sense of self-worth.

As Jadon's mom put it: "Now he understands what it's like to be in the world, and he can be part of that world."

Congratulations, Paolo and Sylvia! 🎉

Please join us in celebrating two of our incredible teachers, Paolo Paelmo and Sylvia Gonzalez, who both just earned their Master’s degrees in Education! 🎓✨

At The Creekside School, we know that teaching students takes a special blend of expertise and passion. By continuing their education, Paolo and Sylvia are bringing even more specialized knowledge into our classrooms and raising the bar for neurodivergent education in San José.

💙 Paolo Paelmo, M.A. in Education (Credentials: Extensive & Mild/Moderate Support Needs)

Paolo's awareness of cognitive, developmental, and physical disabilities has shaped his career. He began with the City of San José’s Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services as a Therapeutic and Inclusion Specialist, empowering individuals with disabilities to gain independence and live with purpose.

After joining Creekside as our High School Vocational Coordinator helping students build real-world job skills, Paolo is stepping into his new role as our Intermediate Classroom Teacher.

💚 Sylvia Gonzalez, M.A. in Education (Credentials: Extensive & Mild/Moderate Support Needs)

Sylvia brings over eight years of behavioral health and education experience to Creekside, where she has been a vital part of our community for nearly five years. Raised in Mexico for the first 16 years of her life, Sylvia returned to the U.S. speaking only Spanish and navigated the immense challenge of adjusting to an English-speaking academic environment.

Despite the language barrier, she completed her Master's in Special Education with dual credentials. As Creekside’s Elementary Teacher, Sylvia draws on her own resilience and empathy to build compassionate connections with our diverse students and families every day.

We are so proud to have educators of this caliber on our team. Thank you, Paolo and Sylvia, for your dedication and for constantly pushing the standard of care for our students! 🙌
