Sam is a tapestry weaver and sculptor currently living and working in Detroit. Sam Dienst layers familiar objects alongside amorphous shapes to fabricate a playful assemblage of color and form. Her vibrant tapestries depict mundane and disparate objects that weave a narrative of daily rituals, perceptions, and experiences. Overlapping elements form painterly compositions of entangled domestic articles, resulting in dynamic, confetti-like clusters that challenge the viewer’s perception of scale. In Cartoon Logic, Dienst’s quasi-self-portraits both critique and celebrate the endless cycle of consumption to reflect our interdependent relationship with the material world.

How does tapestry communicate? We often think about tapestry in terms of technique, process, or image, yet the medium itself plays an active role in shaping meaning. This workshop invites participants to explore tapestry from a different perspective, considering not only what a work communicates, but how tapestry itself contributes to that dialogue. Using a selection of contemporary tapestries, we will explore how artists use the distinctive qualities of the medium to express ideas, asking what tapestry can offer that another medium cannot. Through discussion, observation and reflection, participants will be encouraged to look more closely, question more deeply and reconsider how they read both their own work and that of others. Between the live sessions, participants will continue their exploration in whatever way best supports their thinking.

Help us continue our mission to provide educational opportunities and resources promoting tapestry weaving and the infinite possibilities of the medium. Our current director, Barbara Heller, is retiring after many years of serving ATA. While we are sad that Barbara is stepping down, this is an exciting opportunity to work with a vibrant board and to develop lasting relationships with fellow artists, teachers, and other arts professionals. Some key responsibilities of the role include:

Identifying in-person and online workshop instructors
Working with the board to identify Ambassador Speakers
Partnering with ATA staff to develop Tapestry Week, a week-long series of events just for ATA members in March
Overseeing ATA's mentoring program & other educational resources

Have you heard the news about ATA's monthly online workshops? Each month, we will offer an opportunity to learn from some of the best tapestry teachers, many of whom are based internationally, making it challenging to study with them. Here is a chance to work with the amazing Vaniva Bujalter, , who will guide participants through various textural techniques in woven tapestry.

In this workshop, students will explore a variety of textures using both classic and novelty yarns. Working with different colors, yarn thicknesses, and single or multiple strands, we will learn how to use these techniques in shapes, curves, hatching, soumak, and other woven structures. Participants will also be encouraged to experiment and create their own unique textures.

By the end of the workshop, students will:

Gain an understanding of a range of techniques for creating three-dimensional woven textures on a frame loom.
Explore methods for developing horizontal and vertical texture gradations.
Develop skills in designing and composing textured woven structures through guided exercises.
Gain inspiration from contemporary textile practices that incorporate texture, relief, and dimensionality.

The class will be held in real time, and participants will receive handouts before each session.

ATA is thrilled to host Louise Martin this fall at for her workshop, "Woven Tapestry: Beyond Convention." This three-day in-person workshop takes place October 14, 15, and 16 from 9- 5 p.m. each day in Los Angeles, CA. The course will be based around a series of exercises, designed and set up to allow students to work directly into weave, reacting to the materials given without prior design work. Students will discover what can happen, for example, when usual warp-weft relationships are radically altered or what might be gained by working with materials not ordinarily considered 'textile', or by using yarn in entirely other ways. Participants will also challenge the previous limits to our creative practice; question the essence, nature and otherwise unexplored expressive potential of weave; learn to allow hand and mind to run free, observing rather than controlling the results; and ignite sparks that may inform or transform future work. The course is suitable for intermediate and advanced students.

Thinking Through Tapestry is a juried exhibition featuring work that celebrates, explores, and builds upon specialized techniques often associated with tapestry. Thinking Through Tapestry invites artists to submit work exploring discontinuous weft-faced woven processes rooted in tapestry techniques, such as wedge weave, pulled tapestry, the use of hachures, or other structures, including the H.V. (Handarbetets Vänner) technique, also known as the Theo Moorman technique. The exhibition seeks to highlight work illustrating the close relationship between tapestry weaving*, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Experimentation and inclusion of additional materials (such as clay, steel, or wood) are encouraged and welcome; however, the majority of the submitted work must incorporate mostly handwoven work. Jurors: Emily Silver and Erin M. Riley
