Over 40 years ago, Valerie, Jan, Vicki and our mom Georgia founded Hicklebee's Bookstore in Willow Glen. Today, Valerie and Monica still run the store, well known throughout the US as a national treasure.
It's been hard to watch all Willow Glen business suffer from the effects of COVID-19, but this one hits particularly close to home.
So many of us have watched our kids learn to read between the stacks of books, while parents sweep in to pick up birthday gifts and little thank you's for teachers and friends. It's where so many kids sit in the bathtub to flip through picture books, where we gather and learn and laugh and grow. It's home.
The kids wanted to try to help. So they're at it again, this time in the form of a virtual garage sale. They have a goal to raise $1,000 for HIcklebee's by June 15.
For us, we've been amazed watching the kids get organized, figure out how to make a virtual garage sale happen on Instagram, organize, sanitize, photograph and market their idea.
So join us, this weekend, June 13-15 as Charlie, Ava & Carter host our first-ever virtual garage sale fundraiser.

A few months ago, our family was driving around with the kids talking about churros -- random teen chatter. By the time we reached our driveway, the kids were in full planning for a December pop-up Churros & Chocolate shop on our front lawn, raising money for CityTeam Ministries’ shelter for addicted and homeless in San Jose.
When we have a purpose in life, things become clear: Ours is to raise $4,000 in 12 days for CityTeam by selling churros & chocolate to passersby taking in the holiday lights in Willow Glen.
Friends helped us build signs and donated materials, we bought a freezer for the churros, and a Square reader for credit card donations. We asked friends to volunteer on busy nights and our music teacher to bring her students to sing carols. Even Santa volunteered to make an appearance one night. . We now are proud owners of a commercial-grade churro warmer. :P
We chose CityTeam San Jose because of its unwavering dedication to helping the homeless and addicted people in our community. Addiction runs rampant and destructive in our family, as it does in many families, and we find grace in helping the men and women who have made the decision to choose sobriety and community.
Our $4,000 goal is to meet the needs of the residents who are bravely working their way out of homelessness and addiction. Your donations will provide: Pajamas, socks, sweatshirts, jeans, deodorant, razors, soap and personal care.
This is the most excited we have been for a holiday season in as long as we can remember. We are inspired. We’re ready. And we can’t wait to see you at our little roadside churro stand in Willow Glen.
