"I felt this jail cell break open."

Tomi Adeyemi was watching Devil Wears Prada 2 — a film she has a cameo in — when Meryl Streep delivered a single line that moved her to tears: "I love to work."

She told us she felt seen and released in a way she hadn't expected. That even for someone like her, hearing a woman say that out loud — and get excited about it — cracked something open.

We couldn't stop thinking about it either.

The women who inspire us most aren't always on a stage.

This week our team got asked a question that stopped everyone mid-sentence:
Who is the woman who inspires you most?

Nobody had a quick answer. One person said she realized she couldn't narrow it down — that when she really thought about it, she admires every single one of her friends. Someone talked about her mother-in-law, who moves through life always searching for peace. Someone talked about her daughter, who has an almost supernatural ability to find the positive even when everything around her is hard.

Others named college counselors who changed the trajectory of a student's life. Business owners who built something from nothing. Moms who hold everything together and make it look effortless even when it isn't.

What struck us is that nobody named someone famous. Every single answer was personal. Specific. Someone they know, someone they've watched, someone whose quiet consistency has left a mark.

That's the kind of inspiration that doesn't make headlines — but it's the kind that actually changes people.

Diana Nyad became the first person in history to swim from Cuba to Florida — unprotected, through shark-infested waters, at 64 years old.

Not because of the promotions or the milestones. Because of the quieter things. The boundary you held without apologizing for it. The step you took before you felt ready. The goal you finally let go of because you were honest enough to admit it was never actually yours.

In honor of Mother's Day, we're revisiting this beautiful moment from the 2025 California Conference for Women.

Padma Lakshmi shared a moving reflection on her immigrant mother — a woman who sacrificed endlessly to give her daughter a better life — and how that shaped her own approach to motherhood and to the world. Her mother taught her empathy, curiosity, and the art of truly seeing people.
