Under leadership, we spent MLK Day planting trees in East Palo Alto. We loved 🌱🌳 with .becker.ca , Ruben Abrica, Carlos Romero, at Los Robles Ronald McNair Academy! One of the benefits of planting trees is their cooling effect on playgrounds during hotter months so children can enjoy swings and slides 🛝 year round!

The Guadalupe River is a natural gem just four miles from office. We love catching January sunsets with fellow Bay Area inhabitants like seals and sea gulls.

🐬💵 At Cassell Elementary School, City Year AmeriCorps Members run the Dolphin Store. Students are rewarded on a daily basis for positive behaviors. This month, we are focusing on kindness. When four 4th graders naturally “stood up for a girl who was being bullied for what she was eating in the cafeteria”, Thanaa later celebrated their act of kindness with dolphin bucks. Dolphins bucks also helps students learn about budgeting, saving, and math!

On , we recognize how necessary it is for students to have access to good food.

East Palo Alto is considered to be a food desert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has been exacerbated by recent store closures. Without access to nutritious food, students can't reach their full potential in the classroom.

As free school lunch programs are under threat across the country, we are proud that California school districts continue to offer free meals to their students, regardless of their parents' income.
