The most unlikely friendship was born inside an American concentration camp.

July 25, 2024: The Mineta-Simpson Institute opened at Heart Mountain, honoring a friendship that began there more than 80 years earlier.

Norman Mineta was a Japanese American boy imprisoned behind barbed wire.

Alan Simpson was the son of Heart Mountain’s local scout executive, who regularly visited the camp.

Despite the injustice that surrounded them, the two became friends.
That friendship endured through military service, political careers, and decades of public service. One became the first Asian American cabinet secretary. The other became a U.S. senator.

Together, they spent years speaking about the importance of remembering what happened at Heart Mountain and ensuring it never happened again.

Today, the Mineta-Simpson Institute continues that work by promoting civic engagement, democracy, and historical understanding.

Friendships are sometimes born in the unlikeliest of places.
