Please help!

We hate asking for money, we are always so busy running the program, but we always need help and are fundraising for a new pop up tent setup for regattas. The community foundation provides a match so its a great use of 💵. If you can spare any, we'd really appreciate it.

This is today (Sunday) only!

well this is a fun one :) We have just received a pretty special donation from an Islands sailor. This custom 24' super efficient power trimaran. It does a little over 20kts with a 20hp outboard, runs at about 13 miles per gallon, has carbon lifting foils and handles chop beautifully with its long, wave piercing bow. Its a great NW run about for the discerning sailor 😉 The foundation will clean up a couple of things then put it on the market, in a month or two but we're getting the word out now in case you are, or know anyone who might be interested!

Check out the pics and videos below!

The community foundation matching grants are now live! Lots of worthy causes to donate to but if you can spare some to help keep the kids sailing programs going, we'd really appreciate it and its great value as the first $1000 is matched by the San Juan Island Community Foundation!

Scott Boye Memorial Regatta and 3rd Annual All Islands Youth Regatta
Sunday August 11 (Scott’s Birthday)

Regatta Information:

Jackson Beach, San Juan Island
Registration is now open on ClubSpot. Please register as early as you can so we can plan! https://theclubspot.com/login?next=https%3A%2F%2Ftheclubspot.com%2Fregister%2Fregatta%2FzVtSpTDuAS%2Fclass&success_button_copy=Register%20Now

NORs and SIs are now posted there.

Boats will be provided by the Sailing Foundation for anyone not bringing their own; fleets available include:
RS Tera
ILCA 4
ILCA 6&7 (combined fleet)
V15 (two-handed)
FJ (two-handed)

Please register for your preferred fleet, understanding that the race managers may re-assign sailors to different boats if more people sign up for a particular type of boat than we have, as they cannot magically make more boats.

Cost is $20 per sailor for current youth sailors participating in any of the San Juan Islands programs, and $40 per sailor for alumni sailors (i.e., grown-ups). To get the lower price, please indicate that you are a Member.

Memorial Information

Following the regatta, a memorial will be held at the SJI Yacht Club in Friday Harbor at 6:00 pm. Please bring a favorite dish to share. People will be invited to share remembrances. Scott’s father, sister, and siblings have been invited.

An obituary to Scott can be found here: https://www.sanjuansailing.org/remembering-scott-boye

Scott mentioned only a single non-profit in his will, and to our great honor it was the SJI Sailing Foundation. Should you wish to contribute in his honor, the funds will be used to purchase racing gear for the high school team. If you cannot make the regatta, you can still donate here: https://www.sanjuansailing.org/donate

Please send us an email if your contribution is made in his name with a story or a comment about what he meant to you, maybe a photo, and whether we can share that publicly. Thank you.

We had some tough kids out sailing in the crazy snow/wind/storm this afternoon for our first practice.
We did not get consensus on whether toes and fingers still existed after but everyone survived.
If you know any other high schoolers looking for some type 2 fun, let me know 😉

Are you interested in owning a beautiful, fast, comfortable single handed keelboat? A generous community member has donated a K1 keelboat that is in immaculate condition and has never been sailed. Here is the full add. Please share and pass along to anyone who may be interested!

2018 Rondar/Ovington K1 Dinghy/Keelboat

Fast, fun, elegant single hander that won’t capsize!

This K1 was bought new in 2018 and for various reasons never sailed. It is in perfect condition with full covers, trailer/dolly/trolly and sails that have never been used. It was donated to us by a very generous local sailing aficionado.

It’s a beautiful boat and I’d love for us to keep it in our program to sail but the practical thing to is sell it to fund other needs of the kid’s classes and high school sailing team.

It comes with all the original paperwork and titles for both the boat and the trailer.

If you want to know more about K1’s, check them out here:

Original, imported cost of this boat in 2018 was $16k. We are looking for $14K or best offer. As a 501c3 we can provide a tax receipt for any amount over fair market value if applicable.

(pic of the boat on the grass under covers is real, others are from the internet as it has never been sailed. I’ll get the boat rigged and more pics on the next nice day ;) )

The boat is located in Friday Harbor, WA but I’d be willing to bring it anywhere from Bellingham to Seattle for a serious buyer.

we hosted our "Ring of Fire" middle school sailing regatta on Saturday, rigging up during the eclipse!

30 kids from Bellingham, Anacortes, Orcas and Friday Harbor raced off of Jackson's beach with the sailors swapping in and out of boats from the dock we towed out to the mooring.

Great times and great racing was had, thanks for all the support!

Well done to our winners:

1: June Bernhardt and Timothy Inman (Orcas and Friday Harbor)
2: Alex Lang and Wyatt Ott (Anacortes)
3. Lucas Vanasse and Thomas Knowles (Anacortes)

Fall after school sailing club/race team is starting up again!

WHEN: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15 to 5:30, all of September and October, weather and tide dependent.

We start Tuesday Sept. 6th, and it's okay to start at a later session, even for total newbies

WHERE: Jackson Beach, at the far end

WHAT: Sailing in one- or two-person dinghies, for middle and high school students with any amount of sailing experience, from complete novice to experienced racer.

Younger students will be considered based on their maturity and their own passion for sailing, as well as their size and weight; go ahead and register and we'll be in touch.

HOW MUCH: Cost is $100 per season, full aid is available. Just ask.

WHAT DO I NEED: Ideally, sailors bring their own gear, but we have plenty to lend out. Required gear includes:
PFD (not the inflatable kind)
Wet suit
Booties or water shoes
Gloves
Sun block
Dry towel and dry clothes for afterwards
No cotton clothes can be worn during sailing.

WHAT ELSE: Sailing will be in Griffin Bay. Sailors should show up dressed for sailing (in wet suits) and get rigging as soon as they arrive (newbies don't need to do this until ready to).

Weather and tides are important, and we will text parents and sailors if there will be changes to the start times or if sailing will be cancelled. Sometimes the weather will be too poor to sail, or the tides too low to launch, but we will still have a shortened class where we have on-land lessons (called Chalk Talks). No need to dress for sailing if we announce we'll be holding chalk talks only.

All sailors must have a parent-signed waiver (which will be provided once you register).

All sailors must take a swim test on the first day they attend practice (which is surprisingly popular with the kids). The swim test requires wearing a PFD, jumping off the dock, and swimming to shore. The Island Rec float test and swim team membership don't waive this requirement.

Parent help is essential for running the operation; there's a place to tell us how you can help in the form below.

QUESTIONS: Contact Susan West ([email protected] or 360.595.9595 (cell)).
