Our Staff team would like to announce that we are pausing the Summer Organizer Program for 2026. The Summer Organizer Program (SOP) is a 9-week leadership intensive led by LavNix staff for 6-8 QTAPI people based in the Bay Area to grow their organizing skills, build relationships, and transform! 🌱

This year, our staff team decided to pause SOP to make space our Theory of Change revision process and adapt to emergent crises we know are on the horizon. 🌅

👋Farewell dear Yuan… & welcome beloved Tina! 💟

This past November, we celebrated the beautiful transition between Lavender Phoenix’s Executive Directors! After a beautiful 8 years in LavNix, we said goodbye to Yuan & said a BIG hello to our beloved new ED, Tina! 🎉

Yuan first joined Lavender Phoenix as a Summer Organizer in 2018, then went on to serve as a Staff organizer until 2021 when she officially became the org’s Executive Director. During Yuan’s staff tenure, she touched every part of our work from our trans justice work, our communications committee, strategizing in Core & campaigns work. She led the organization to make difficult and strategic decisions, sunsetting committees to leading new ones, that allowed the organization to grow and transform in staff capacity, member leadership and capacity as a liberatory fighting organization! 🌱

Now, we fully welcome Tina to our Staff team as our newest Executive Director! Tina comes to Lavender Phoenix with a wealth of experience from her years organizing in the SF Bay as well as with our close friends at GABRIELA ! (Be on the look out for a beautiful letter from Tina later this month on her reflections entering this role. 👀)

Through all of 2025 – particularly our Staff Retreat, Core Retreat, our End of Year Celebration – both of these organizers have worked so hard to make this transition as easeful as possible for our org and community. Yuan & Tina: both of you are so cherished, & we look forward to seeing your continued organizing in the coming years, whether in Lavender Phoenix or elsewhere in our great movement ecosystem!

Yuan once beautifully said: “As we move forward, we know that organizing as Lavender Phoenix will mean so much more than just the words we call ourselves. Lavender Phoenix means an everyday commitment to remembering our history. 🥁We are excited to announce that a very special person has joined Lavender Phoenix’s staff… 💐Tina Shauf-Bajar, LavNix’s next Executive Director! 💫

✊Tina comes to LavNix after two decades of building working-class power in the Bay Area & beyond. She spent years organizing with the Filipino Community Center, GABRIELA, & Migrante before previously serving as the Director of Operations & Organizational Culture at the California Domestic Workers Coalition. She brings an abundance of care for the people she organizes with, a resilient commitment to optimism, & an unwavering determination to win.

🎤Tina wants to share: “I feel so honored to be joining Lavender Phoenix as your next Executive Director! As a q***r daughter of immigrants, born in the Philippines, raised in a working-class Black and Brown immigrant community, it is important to me that trans, q***r and nonbinary API communities are a part of building people-power across poor and working-class BIPOC communities.”

“During this time of authoritarianism, as state violence rises at unprecedented rates, we must remember our elders and ancestors have gotten us ready for this. 🎉This year, we had our TENTH anniversary of our Q***r Leadership Exchange aka LEX! We were joined by 27 TQAPI organizers to sharpen our understanding of our movement, strengthen our organizing practices, and deepen our relationships with each other.

📚Across two weekends, our cohort gathered to learn about the robust and agitating history of our QTAPI movement elders, build foundational relational organizing skills, and share our own personal histories as protagonists in the long lineage of trans and q***r resistance!

🙏We are SO grateful for all of our 2025 LEX cohort who committed to showing up with honesty & vulnerability, as well as commitment and rigor to collectivizing each of our own knowledge on how to show up as leaders. LEX came to life because of all of YOU!

🌹We also want to give love to all of the Lavender Phoenix organizers, staff, and LEX alums who showed up with so much empathy and dedication to creating a connective experience for us! From holding your pods with care to facilitating deep learning for our cohort, we are so thankful for the intention you put into molding our 2025 LEX experience. 🎤 DROP THE MIC, NOT THE MASK! 😷

This August, Lavender Phoenix hosted Drop the MIC: a community event focused on spreading COVID safety awareness & combatting the Medical Industrial Complex (MIC). Together we made DIY air-filters & art that encompasses the many experiences folks are navigating against the MIC.

💢At a time when we are facing a fascist government that cuts healthcare, spreads COVID denial, & funds policing and genocide—we want to remind folks that COVID safety is integral to fighting back.

❤️‍🩹And it’s all interconnected. Disability Justice activist, Patty Berne, shared: “We understand that all bodies are caught in these bindings of ability, race, gender, sexuality, class, nation state and imperialism, and that we cannot separate them.”

🫶So much gratitude & appreciation for all the community who made Drop the MIC possible: , , , & all our Summer Organizers. We created something truly beautiful together.
