The Parks Conservancy and the incredible restoration of the Alcatraz Historic Gardens were featured on the national public radio program recently. Who better than the Superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to kick off National Park Week 🌁☁️🌲!? National Park Week spans from Aug. 22-30 and is the perfect time to celebrate all things national parks. Whether it's hiking the new Golden Gate Dozen trail that connects 12 park sites in one 13-mile route, or planning another outdoor adventure, we encourage everyone to get outside and revel in the beautiful public lands of the Bay and beyond. Fogust doesn't bog us down—in fact, we're getting right into the thick of it because the annual raptor migration is here! Every year, from mid-August to early December, thousands of birds of prey come through the Marin Headlands as they make their incredible journeys along the vast Pacific Flyway. We're welcoming back the Hawkwatch and Banding teams, and you can keep up to date with the hawks we're counting at the Daily Hawkwatch Blog at parksconservancy.org.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is the perfect place for biking, hiking, picnicking, and…writing poetry! There’s no better muse than the sprawling coastlines and iconic silhouettes of Crissy Field.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Crissy Field, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is hosting Poetry in the Parks: Share Your Voice! This is a series of free public poetry writing workshops led by acclaimed poet Jodie Hollander, at locations throughout Crissy Field.

The events are filling up and there may be a waitlist, but check back at parksconservancy.org and sign up for our newsletter to get the latest on possible future poetry events.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Crissy Field, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is hosting Poetry in the Parks: Share Your Voice, a series of free public poetry writing workshops at locations throughout Crissy Field from August 28–30, 2026.

Led by acclaimed poet Jodie Hollander, the workshops invite participants to slow down, observe the landscape, and create original poems inspired by their personal connection to Crissy Field and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. No poetry experience is necessary.

A river otter was spotted in Muir Woods this summer! The adorable North American river otter is a fierce and effective hunter that resides in the forests and coastal wetlands of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

River otters can travel great distances (up to 25 miles overnight!), so you may see them in the wetlands at Muir Beach, Tennessee Valley, or Rodeo Lagoon.

Be sure to keep a safe and respectful distance If you spot wildlife in the parks.

Last month, The Parks Conservancy’s Community Stewardship and Engagement team welcomed folks from Main Library Deaf Services out to Alcatraz for Summer Stride! It was a beautiful day of touring the island and learning about the history and ecology of Alcatraz through ASL interpreters. Days like this root us in our mission of Parks for All, forever.

✍️ Poetry in the Parks: Share Your Voice: Crissy Field turns 25 this year, and we're celebrating with free poetry writing workshops. August 28–30, spots are capped at 25 per session, registration required. Bring a notebook, a pen, comfortable layers, and a willingness to explore the park through words.
🎉 National Park Week: August 22–30 marks the NPS's 110th birthday, the perfect excuse to get outside and explore the nearby national parks in your own backyard.
🌱 Dig in at Black Point at Fort Mason: Hidden for decades, this 1850s garden is being brought back to life by volunteers. Join us on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (1st) for weeding, pruning, and planting as we restore pathways that haven't seen visitors in over a century.
