Bringing coastal science and storytelling to life 🌊

From the Sanctuary Visitor Center to the North Coast, new interpretive projects are creating meaningful, place-based learning experiences for all. In partnership with local communities, we’re helping develop educational panels for the Ocean Climate Center and a new outdoor kiosk in Point Arena near the Stornetta Lands—connecting people more deeply to this incredible coastline and the ecosystems it supports.

Come explore, learn, and be inspired.

The Greater Farallones Beach Watch program is supporting response efforts to the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) affecting wildlife along California’s central and northern coast. Sanctuary partners have confirmed cases in elephant seals, seabirds, and other marine mammals with the outbreak centered at Año Nuevo State Park. Beach Watch is instrumental in tracking wildlife and reporting unusual mortality events, providing critical data as the seabird breeding season begins.

Public risk remains low, but visitors should keep at least 150 yards from wildlife, leash pets, and avoid sick or deceased animals. Report stranded marine mammals to the NOAA West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Hotline at (866) 767-6114. For the latest updates, safety guidance, and reporting information, please refer to the website in our bio.

Beach Watch staff recently shared new findings at the Pacific Seabird Group Annual Meeting, highlighting how decades of volunteer-powered monitoring contribute to real-world science and conservation.

Using more than 30 years of community science data, the study shows increasing sightings of Brown Pelicans along Northern California’s coast alongside rising mortality. Researchers also found that pelicans have been staying in the region longer each year since 2016

These findings underscore the value of long-term monitoring and the important role Beach Watch volunteers play in helping scientists and resource managers understand and respond to change along our coast.
