A Place of Her Own

A Place of Her Own PLACE Residency is a 6 month series of weekly workshops culminating in an arts exhibition.

An art based healing practice dedicated to providing tools and guidance exploring ancestral patterns that both cause chronic heartache and foster resilience amongst women and communities of color and beyond. Designed to release old patterns and habits, including their links to individual, family, cultural and historical dysfunction, it encourages Asian American and women of color to take control of their own mental and spiritual well-being.

Using found objects, their intuition and self-agency, they create works that speak to their healing journeys, imperfect, messy and gloriously full of epiphanies.

After a lifetime of overriding my body’s needs, judging her as lesser, and mistrusting her, I have come home to my body. Now I rely on her wisdom and compassion to guide me. What does my Body want? I ask.

I arrived at this Place of My Own through self-portraits that explore my aging body. This journey began unexpectedly nearly a decade ago when I was 71.

Cynthia Tom is an award-winning San Francisco-based visual artist and curator of over 40 years. She is a painter, found object installation artist, community curator and transformation content consultant. Cynthia intuitively explores cultural heritage, healing, empowerment, spirituality, family patterns of trauma, and feminism through the lens of social justice, community, and healing. She teaches from what she heals in herself.

She is the Founding Director of A PLACE of HER OWN: An Arts based healing program for women of color and ultimately communities of color. They learn to explore and challenge chronic heartache and limiting beliefs due to ancestral trauma and colonization, gaining tools to access intuition and nurture self-care. Photo Cris Matos

Julie Andersen, AKA Jiili, co-curator for A PLACE OF HER OWN’s 2026 exhibition at J-Sei an art-based healing initiative where participants explore the question: If you had a place of your own, what would it be?
I am the founder of ChatterBox Arts International and the Annual San Francisco Altered Barbie Exhibition. I am also a biodynamic cranial sacral practitioner and visual artist serving the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.

I lead and co-lead community health and wellness workshops, as well as art-making residencies throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the Central Valley, and China.

I have the privilege and honor of working alongside Cynthia Tom and A PLACE OF HER OWN, together with many remarkable PLACE alumni. As a co-curator, I am deeply grateful for the trust these women place in me, allowing me to support them on their journeys toward reclaiming wholeness and connectedness through exploration, play, and art-making.

These shared experiences have profoundly shaped my life, fostering connections that bridge divides and heal personal wounds in ways that only this kind of human connection
