Another excerpt from Meng Su’s performance of “Rat,” the opening movement of Sérgio Assad’s Chinese Zodiac.

The work features twelve movements, each named after an animal of the Chinese zodiac. Recorded live in San Francisco in collaboration with the Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts.

BACH: FRENCH SUITES

Courante from Bach’s French Suite No. 1, Part II.

Articulation, rhythm, tempo and agogic flexibility are all essential in Bach, but one element we pay particular attention to is harmony.

The second half of a Baroque dance often begins in the dominant, and for us this change of harmonic perspective also suggests a stronger interpretative statement. It affects the character of the very first gesture and the way we enter the second half of the movement. This is something we always have in mind before playing the first note.
