The Supreme Court is poised to rule on a case that could slam the door shut on people seeking refuge at our nation's doorstep.

In an op-ed for TIME, former congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman calls the Trump administration's arguments in our case with Al Otro Lado "a distortion of the law" and "a display of callous indifference to the tragedies that moved Congress to pass the Refugee Act," a bill that she co-authored.

"The Congress in which I served, in legislation which I co-authored, intended to give asylum seekers who encounter a U.S. official at the border the opportunity to exercise their right to seek asylum," Holtzman says. "It’s that simple ... lives are at stake."

BREAKING: Today a federal appeals court ruled that the Trump administration's Day 1 proclamation aimed at completely shutting down asylum at the border is unlawful.

“Since January of last year, the government has used the proclamation to implement a near-total shutdown of asylum processing, slamming the door on vulnerable families, children, and adults seeking refuge,” CGRS Litigation Director Melissa Crow said today.

“As the court rightly concluded, U.S. law is clear: People seeking safety have a legal right to apply for asylum. The government cannot wield racist, baseless claims of an ‘invasion’ to override Congress and deprive them of that right.”

We are proud to represent our partners at RAICES, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, and The Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project in this lawsuit, alongside our co-counsel at ACLU, National Immigrant Justice Center, Texas Civil Rights Project, ACLU of the District of Columbia, and ACLU of Texas.

Yesterday morning faith leaders, immigrant rights advocates, and community members gathered at the Supreme Court to declare “No Turning Back” on the rights of people seeking safety.

Ahead of arguments in Noem v. Al Otro Lado, the Kairos Center led a coalition of faith groups in song and prayer, while advocates joined them to rally behind the legal team fighting for people seeking refuge at our southern border, including Al Otro Lado and their counsel at the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the American Immigration Council, Democracy Forward, and the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection.

Leading organizations across faith traditions came together to affirm their shared commitment to “welcoming the stranger,” and to urge the U.S. government to honor its legal and moral obligations to refugee families, children, and adults fleeing persecution.

No matter the outcome in this case, we will continue to stand with people seeking safety and welcome newcomers at the border. Asylum saves lives.

The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court for the green light to close the door on people seeking safety at our southern border.

Next Tuesday, CGRS, Al Otro Lado, and our partners are headed to SCOTUS to fight back.

With partners working along the border, Al Otro Lado shares why asylum matters, and why we can never turn our backs on families, children, and adults seeking refuge at our nation’s doorstep.

CGRS is excited to announce the official launch of our Refugee Leadership Program and welcome our two inaugural Fellows, A.R. and P.Z.*

A.R. fled Iran as a teenager with her family when her father was targeted by the government as a political opponent. Based on the East Coast, A.R. is currently finishing a master’s program in Near Eastern Studies and will start law school this fall.

“CGRS’s Refugee Leaders Fellowship has been a career-defining moment for me, and it has solidified my decision to pursue a career in immigration and refugee law,” A.R. says. "I am beyond grateful for the experience and excited to work closely with the litigation team at CGRS.”

P.Z. was forced to leave their Central Asian country where they faced persecution by the government for their human rights activism. P.Z. currently lives on the West Coast, where they continue their advocacy while enrolled in a graduate program.

“I am excited to develop my skills in project management, fundraising, and advocacy,” P.Z. says. "I will focus on developing a culturally sensitive and language-accessible toolkit for newcomers to get easier access to crucial services as well as simplify navigation through the U.S. asylum system."
