Sutro Stewards

Sutro Stewards Conservation. Recreation. Stewardship. https://linktr.ee/sutro.stewards

The Sutro Stewards was formed to address a unique need in San Francisco, fostering positive relationships between habitat conservation needs and the recreational needs of a dense urban population. The Sutro Stewards is currently the largest organized independent volunteer pool in San Francisco, equipped for habitat conservation and trail restoration activities on city, state or privately owned pro

perties. Continuing to educate and mobilize this active community is a key element to creating sustainable open space recreational opportunities within our dense urban environment. The Sutro Stewards has bridged the gap with our award winning volunteer stewardship program which is now ready to begin the challenge of working with multiple county agencies to create a regional park. Through our outreach, the Sutro Stewards can both recruit new members, and promote proper environmental conservation and recreational awareness. This approach provides both short-term assistance through volunteerism and a long-term solution through education, outreach, and the formation of more community stewardship projects. Already the Mount Sutro project, led by the Sutro Stewards program, has created San Francisco’s first network of multi-use trails within an open space area. The program launched in 2006 and has taken the lead with trails specifically designed and constructed to handle contemporary off road recreation including hiking, running, cycling, and nature observation. These trails have provided the access necessary to implement habitat conservation measures within previously inaccessible areas.

Plant medicine and curious students under the moonlight. 🌝 We were so honored to hold space for our first Heal the Healers program last week, inviting UCSF medical students to ground down on a twilight hike that honored the Indigenous ancestors of the mountain, and concluded with some cozy yerba buena + hummingbird sage tea around the candlelight.

Big welcome to Venus who joined the team as an urban ecology intern in September 2024 and is excited to learn about Mt Sutros history, native species, and community! 💚

Venus is currently working on a Parks & Recreation degree from San Francisco State University with a minor in q***r ethnic studies. For two years, he worked alongside Elliot and 2 scrubjays at SFSU greenhouse, cultivating a stronger relationship with plants and learning about native species. He is interested in learning more about indigenous land stewardship and how communities can live off of natural landscapes.

We’re excited to announce that the Health in Nature program is partnering again with UCSF’s Growth Program—a training and employment initiative designed to introduce individuals receiving Behavioral Health Services (BHS) to the field of landscaping through both classroom and hands-on experience. 🌿

After exploring native plants like hummingbird sage, yerba buena, and mugwort in the nursery, the crew removed over 250 square feet of invasive cape ivy at the Fairy Circle, marveling at orb weaver spiders, woodlouses, and pillbugs along the way ✨

OMG tis the season of orb weavers! They’re all over spinning silky homes traversing plant, tree and vine! It is truly captivating to follow their threads, sometimes crossing trails, and imagine how they might have chosen to spin a web from here to there 🤷‍♀️
