AGUILAS EL AMBIENTE HIV prevention for the LatinX community. Safer s*x education and LGBTQIA+ support in the SF Bay Area.

In 1994, AGUILAS (Asamblea Gay Unida Impactando Latinos A Superarse) pioneered a comprehensive HIV prevention and education program called "EI Ambiente" (or "in the life") for gay and bis*xual Latinx men living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The program's goal is to give members the information and tools needed to practice safer s*x, as well as provide them with a safe, interactive environment to

discuss LGBTQI+ issues that are specific to Latinx culture. Since its founding, AGUILAS EI Ambiente's wide range of workshops – hosted in Spanish, English and Portuguese – have improved the well-being of its 500+ members, while reducing both isolation and high-risk s*xual behaviors. OUR MISSION
AGUILAS is dedicated to creating a supportive, culturally sensitive environment for gay/bis*xual Latinos. We strive to foster knowledge and pride of the diversity of our language, culture, history and spirituality. AGUILAS is committed to developing programs that promote health, well-being and community building that foster positive self-identities, healthy relationships and leadership skills.

Our Story

Since June 1994, AGUILAS (Asamblea Gay Unida Impactando Latinos A Superarse)has sponsored an HIV prevention program for gay and bis*xual Latinos called "El Ambiente" (literally translated, it means "in the life"). The goal of the program is to prevent the occurrence and relapse of unsafe s*xual practices. This is achieved by providing a safe environment and taking in consideration issues specific to Latino culture, and being gay or bis*xual. All activities are friendly, interactive and educational. The workshops offered by AGUILAS El Ambiente have been found to reduce high-risk behaviors for HIV infection amongst gay and bis*xual Latino men.
