Today, L'Chaim had the privilege of attending the first screening of a powerful new film about Lia, a Holocaust survivor whose life story spans continents, generations, and some of history's most challenging moments.
Lia survived World War II, wartime evacuation to Kazakhstan, and antisemitism in post-war Ukraine. Despite these hardships, she built a new life in the United States, carrying with her an unwavering optimism, kindness, and love of life.
Over the years, Lia shared her gift of music with the community, performing in Jewish community centers, Jewish musical groups, and even with the San Francisco Opera. With support from JFCS, she was able to make her journey to the United States and build a new home and community.
Today, filmmakers, representatives of the JFCS Holocaust Center, representatives of the San Francisco Opera, family members, friends, and community members gathered for the first public screening of this remarkable film. The documentary, created by Yoav Potash, is a beautiful and moving work of art that captures not only Lia's experiences, but also her spirit, strength, and humanity.
The heartfelt words shared by those in attendance reminded us that even after experiencing unimaginable hardship, it is possible to choose hope, kindness, and joy.
At L'Chaim, our name means "For Life." Today was a celebration of life, of resilience, and of those who endured history's darkest chapters and still found reasons to sing, to love, and to inspire others.
Thank you, Lia, for sharing your story with the world. 💙✨
