Concept / Myth

The myth of Orpheus is a story about love, loss, and one impossible condition: to lead Eurydice out of the underworld without ever looking back.

At the threshold between worlds, he turns and loses her forever.

In The Glance: A Laptopera, that moment becomes a reflection on surveillance, witnessing, and trust in the digital age.

What does an operatic instrument look like in 2026?

Orphea’s Lyre, performed by vocalist Carmina Escobar (Orphea), is built from deconstructed cassette players that record and layer sound live during performance.

This analog looping system becomes both instrument and character, as Orphea attempts to communicate with the underworld.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for The Glance Soft Opening featuring composer Anne Hege and vocalist Sidney Chen (Hades). In this open rehearsal, Hege and Chen refined Hades Orb — a motion-tracked hoop that filters sound in real time — shaping nuanced interactions between Chen’s vocal line and the Orb’s live, responsive processing.

Audiences witnessed how subtle shifts in movement and phrasing generated character, intimacy, and connection within this new opera for laptop orchestra and live voices.

Missed this one?
Keep an eye out for the next open rehearsal in March and experience the work in progress as it continues to evolve!
