As seen at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View (https://computerhistory.org), the Hollerith punch card and tabulating machine. Why is it interesting? It was used to tabulate the 1890 census statistics, the first time a machine was employed for this purpose.

In 2006, the founders of SFgenealogy heard that Halsted N. Gray-Carew & English Funeral Home (the oldest mortuary in SF at the time) were looking to clear out their old paper records. Of course, in spite of no money, we jumped at the opportunity. We were given the majority of the records (the SF Public Library took the oldest ones), and with the help of FamilySearch were able to digitize them. They are now available at FamilySearch, with partially indexed collections at Ancestry.com and SFgenealogy.org . One major shout-out to our friend Dane Stanley (formerly of Halsted N. Gray) who made it all happen!

Special presentations each day: on Friday, Elizabeth Winslow offers a guide to creating your own family legacy book. On Saturday, Linda Harms Okazaki discusses "Two Case Studies," sharing the journeys of two California immigrants. Full details at https://www.californiaancestors.org/family-history-month-2025/
