We congratulate our friends at Mollie Stone's Markets for celebrating their 40th Anniversary!

In 1986 Mike Stone opened the largest Natural Food Store in Northern California at the time, and named it after his late Mother Mollie, who worked in the Grocery industry for 45 years. At the time, they were one of the only stores that specialized in local, organic food. They’ve since become one of the largest natural food markets in California, with eight unique locations across the Bay Area. They opened their distribution site on The SF Market in the mid-90s.

In addition to providing quality food and produce, Mollie Stone’s supports several important local community organizations and initiatives, including The SF Market’s Food Recovery Program. We’re grateful to have them as valued members of The Market family!

Fun Fact: the Mollie Stone’s Market on California Street in San Francisco was the first ever grocery store with a Starbucks inside.

A few weeks ago, Super Typhoon Sinlaku (Category 5) hit Guam, the Marianas and the Western Pacific islands, bringing hurricane-force wind gusts and flash flooding throughout the region. This past Saturday 5/9 Gavin and the team at Pay-less Logistics transformed their warehouse space at The SF Market into a collection and distribution site to gather supplies for those affected by the storm.

Pay-less Logistics is unique on The Market - their primary business is exporting fresh produce to Guam, including to their sister company, Pay-Less Supermarkets. This is a cause near to their hearts and community. They were joined by over 30 volunteers and collected over 25,000 pounds in donations, including drinking water, sanitary kits, baby supplies, packaged food and toiletries. This effort is a great example of how The SF Market’s food infrastructure provides essential services and increases community resilience.

Si Yu'os ma'åse to the Pay-less team and volunteers!

Happy ! 🌍 At The SF Market we're committed to elevating sustainability and equity in every aspect of our work. From reducing food waste to building resilient community networks, we're dedicated to shaping a brighter, more sustainable future.

The SF Market has partnered with the City of San Francisco for over three decades in support of their environmental goals and Climate Action Plan. In 1996, the City invited The SF Market to serve as a pilot site for their now widely successful municipal green waste recycling program. Today, our Food Recovery Program furthers green waste reduction by connecting edible surplus produce to community partners working to address food security. Eliminating unnecessary food waste diverts edible produce from landfill, reduces methane emissions, and conserves natural resources, and lowers the carbon footprint of our local food system.

We’re grateful for the ongoing support of our City partners, including SF Environment and The Office of Economic and Workforce Development, as we continue expanding food access and reducing waste across our community.

Today, , we celebrate the dedicated growers, producers, suppliers, wholesalers, and food workers who power our food system and bring nutritious fresh produce to our tables.

At The SF Market, our merchants work with over 350 growers, many located across California and the West Coast. The Market provides critical food infrastructure that connects these farmers with Bay Area restaurants, grocers, caterers, and other food-businesses, ensuring our community has access to fresh, nutritious produce throughout the year.

Pictured here are our friends at Durst Organic Growers (visited today by Market merchant Earl's Organic !). Located in Esparto, Yolo County, the Durst family, who specialize in fresh organic produce. One of their specialties is purple and green asparagus, which they first planted in 1997. Producers like the Durst family are the backbone of our economy, providing a sustainable and equitable future for our local food system.

We proudly celebrate the incredible bounty of Californian agriculture and the dedicated people who nourish our communities.

March 16th is National Artichoke Day! Artichokes are the official state vegetable of California, where nearly all of the domestic artichokes are grown. Many artichokes at The SF Market come right from Castroville, CA – the self-proclaimed artichoke capital of the world! Although widely considered a vegetable, artichokes are actually the unopened flower buds of the thistle plant. Artichokes have been eaten for millennia – it’s believed that they were a common dietary staple in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Today we enjoy artichokes because they are a good source of antioxidants, vitamin C, folate, magnesium and fiber.

Happy International Women’s Day! Today, we proudly celebrate all of the women shaping the produce industry—from growers and shippers to merchants right here at The SF Market!

Meet a few of the woman leaders and trailblazers who are shaping The Market’s future:

- Sarah Houston is the Director of Operations for Stanley Produce, pictured here with her aptly-named pup, Stanley! Produce is very much in Sarah’s DNA – she’s the fourth generation of her family to work for the company, which began at San Francisco’s original produce market almost 100 years ago!

- Juana Posadas is the General Manager for Arcadio’s Produce, which launched right here at The SF Market in 2010. Juana tells us “At Arcadios Produce, we never say no to a challenge. Serving as General Manager is a demanding role, but leading such an incredible team in the heart of San Francisco is a privilege I value every day.” She’s pictured here with a few of the other inspiring women who make up the Arcadio’s team.

- Cindy Chen is a Jill-of-all-trades for Fresh Green, where she oversees the accounting department and assists with sales and cash register operations, ensures the timely collection of customer payments and manages prompt payments to our suppliers and employees. She is inspired by the people around her, from the early morning energy of the market to the constant exchange of knowledge between our customers and staff.

- Mabel Herrick works with Earl’s Organic Produce, an A–Z organic produce distributor connecting farms of all sizes to customers since 1988. In her day-to-day role, she focuses on building relationships with growers and customers, ensuring fresh, organic produce moves seamlessly from farm to market — inspired daily by the hardworking farmers and food community she’s grateful to support and be a part of. She’s pictured here speaking at our 10 Million Pound Food Recovery celebration in October.

We are so grateful to work alongside these inspiring women each and every day, along with all of the incredible women at The SF Market!

Thank you to Jennifer Strailey, and for sharing how 4,000 of fresh, surplus produce gets redistributed from SF Market merchants to trusted community organizations each morning. Through incredible partnerships with our 20 Market Merchants, over 81 community organizations, and city funders and supporters, The SF Market’s Food Recovery Program has recovered over 10 million pounds for our community.

Happy Lunar New Year! 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse – symbolizing energy, freedom, passion, and forward momentum, all traits which our merchants and their teams bring to The SF Market each and every day. While the Year of the Horse comes around every 12 years, the last Year of the Fire Horse was in 1966! Around The Market, our merchants, including Fresh Green, S&L Produce and Berti Produce, are stocked with colorful displays carrying nuts, dried fruits, candies and pomelos for upcoming New Year celebrations.

Did you know – citrus fruits including oranges, tangerines, mandarins, and kumquats are common food gifts and decorations for Chinese New Year as they are thought to bring good luck, happiness and prosperity. This rich cultural tradition originated due to the Chinese word for tangerine sounding like “luck” and the word for orange sounding like “wealth”. Their round shape represents fullness and abundance and the smoothness demonstrates a wish that everything you do will be effortless.
