From our friend Honey Mahogany: On National Coming Out Day, our friend and activist Honey Mahogany reminds us that as we celebrate, we can also recognize the historical ties to the fight for racial justice.

Black Panther Party founder Huey Newton recognized that Black people and LGBTQ+ people faced the same oppressive systems, and so he called for the Black civil rights movement and the LGBTQ+ liberation movement to come together. It was 1970, but Newton’s call for a united front remains relevant. Today, those coming for LGBTQ+ rights are the same ones erasing Black history.

National Coming Out Day isn’t just about visibility and living authentically. It’s also about coming together to accomplish full liberation for both Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

From our friends at the SF LGBT Center: What do the headlines about Title IX really mean, and why does it matter? Here’s what you should know:
The revoked 2024 Title IX rule explicitly banned discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This affects all LGBTQ+ students.
This is part of a larger attack on LGBTQ+ rights. Trump has also targeted gender-affirming care for trans youth and the support they receive at school. LGBTQ+ young people deserve to learn safely, get the care they need and grow up knowing they belong.
California still protects LGBTQ+ students. State law bars discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in state-supported educational programs. Title IX itself also remains law.
Now is the time to support LGBTQ+ youth.
Now is the time to support the SF LGBT Center.
In 2025, our Drop-In Program supported 500+ young people with food, clothing, gender-affirming gear and resource referrals.

The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District is proud to celebrate Latino heritage month. This year Chicana le***an artist Ester Hernandez was given the Dr. Estela Garcia award (rest in peace, another Chicana le***an).  The evening was a great opportunity to come together at City Hall to lift up community leaders and organizing. Life is good!

On October 7, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was brutally attacked and tied to a fence in a field outside of Laramie, Wyoming and left to die. On October 12, Matt succumbed to his wounds in a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. The staff and advisory board members share this to commemorate his loss and to encourage members of the LGBTQ+ communities (and our allies) to register to vote. This election is important for our rights as q***r and trans people, places and culture are under attack.

The 2026 midterms are less than two months way. This election will have a crucial impact on LGBTQ+ rights. If you don’t already have a voting plan, it’s time to make one.
