Advancing Solutions to Homelessness

Homebase is a national nonprofit dedicated to building community capacity to end homelessness, reduce poverty, and foster thriving communities. Homebase is a collective of legal, policy, and subject matter experts who are also data geeks, skilled facilitators, and strategic thinkers and planners dedicated to addressing homelessness and its root causes. Applying

over three decades of experience in the homelessness response field and expertise that spans disciplines and geographies, Homebase works directly with communities to develop strengths-based, customized responses to their most pressing challenges. We partner with clients in the public, non-profit, and faith-based sectors to identify barriers and key resources, refine their ideas and goals, and design scalable solutions. We believe that meaningful impact results from robust and intentional collaboration across sectors and systems, cultivation of passionate leaders, and skillful ex*****on of policy and practice to achieve sustainable results. Our approach is focused and practical, but driven by an expansive, long-term vision of system integration and a comprehensive, coordinated response to homelessness and poverty.

Half of all American renters are struggling to afford their housing while millions are one emergency away from homelessness. A focus on prevention can stem that inflow and reduce strain on homelessness response systems.

In partnership with Right at Home, Homebase is building a national network of experts - including community practitioners and individuals with lived experience of homelessness or housing insecurity - to deepen the impact of homelessness prevention as a crucial intervention in homelessness response.

Please join us for our initial convenings:

Webinar: Spotlight on National Examples

Listening session: Spotlight on Lived Experience Perspectives

This , our communities need your support. We invite you to give to Homebase’s Lived Experience Leadership Fund – a resource that lowers barriers for people with lived experience of homelessness to attend and lead national conferences and learning spaces. It’s more important than ever that people with lived experience are at the table — leading, informing, and educating decision makers.

Destination: Home is seeking to partner with individuals from across the United States, U.S. Territories, and Tribal Nations who have current or former lived experience of homelessness to form a National Lived Experience Leadership and Advocacy Board (LEAB). This 15-member board will use their lived experience to help shape national decisions and systems so that people most affected by homelessness have a real voice and equal power in creating lasting change.

By elevating lived experience voices in national conversations and maintaining strong ties to local communities, the LEAB will ensure that national decisions and solutions remain accountable to the insights and priorities of lived experience leaders and the communities they represent.

We're outlining 5 key takeaways from H.R.1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” The bill contains the largest cuts to the social safety net in America’s history, with millions expected to lose Medicaid and SNAP. People experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable to the changes in the bill, like work requirements and increased renewal checks.

⚫ H.R.1 doesn’t cut housing programs but will increase homelessness.
⚫ Eligible people will lose benefits through administrative hurdles.
⚫ People experiencing homelessness are vulnerable to the new Medicaid and SNAP requirements.
⚫ There is time to prepare for the new procedural requirements.
⚫ Homeless systems and providers can help minimize the harms of Medicaid and SNAP losses for their clients.

When people experiencing homelessness can access shelter and services with their pets, they are able to take better care of themselves and their pets.

When shelter and services don't accommodate pets, it creates a barrier to people becoming stably housed. No one wants to be separated from their companion!

We spoke with folks experiencing homelessness to learn more and developed a guide for shelters and other housing facilities to begin considering adopting co-sheltering policies. Visit our website for a full set of resources and research!

We're making the case for co-sheltering with pets. Co-sheltering means sheltering people and animals together in a temporary or emergency housing facility.

Research has shown that individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness will refuse to live separated from their pets. In one case study, shelter residents reported that accommodation of pets was a critical factor in their decision to seek shelter. As such, when shelters are not prepared to accommodate pets, it creates a barrier to shelter.

We're sharing lots of resources in our newsletter for why co-sheltering matters and how shelter facilities can begin considering adopting co-sheltering policies. Visit our website and slide through for more information!

We had a great time at the National Alliance to End Homelessness National Conference! Our very own Maddie Nation and Shebani Rao presented with Sarah Brasel and Jennifer Harkey on how homelessness systems leaders can collaborate with criminal legal system actors like public defenders and probation departments to better serve our shared clients.

We're thankful for the opportunity to share our learnings from working with communities all over the county.
