Join us, this Saturday, August 15th 2–4PM for a FREE Woodblock Printing workshop led by Joe Ferriso. Participants will have a chance to experiment with various block printing techniques with custom made shapes from the artist’s collection, and add to a growing printed mural which will be on view in the gallery through September 19th. No prior printmaking experience is necessary, this workshop is designed for all ages and materials will be provided.

Embracing play, freedom, and optimism, Joe Ferriso‘s sculptural and painted works are primarily concerned with how color perception impacts emotion. Ferriso’s subject is the relationship between architecture and nature, expressed in the language of color. His love for tuning color and the sheer energy of color motivates his actions. Like a vine to a lattice, his color enmeshes with the art object, bringing it to life. The materials that he works with are discards or found in nature. Construction waste, building off-cuts, driftwood, found wood, and abandoned paint colors are the starting points of his labor.

Join us this Saturday, 2–4pm in celebration of Mário Pires Cordeiro's site-responsive installation REIMAGININGS, on view as part of the rotating Teaching / Practice exhibition which features SFArtsED Artist Mentors' works paired with a short interview about their teaching approach.

Works by Mário's students' from SFArtsED Summer Camp will also be on view in the concurrent Summerscape exhibition, also opening Saturday August 8, 2–4pm.

From life-size aliens to sculpture, collage, painting, zines, and jewelry — this summer the creative juices were flowing! We're delighted to a share a selection of the student work made this summer in camp. Join is this Saturday, August 8th from 2–4pm in celebration of the students and the great work they created.

Summerscape 2026 marks the 31st year that SFArtsED has offered a summer visual art and design camps to the middle school-aged young people of San Francisco. This annual exhibition showcases a selection of artworks created in camp sessions taught by Artist Mentors Ramon Abad, C.K. Itamura, Rachel Major, Tainá Mattiazzi, Tiersa Nureyev, and Mario Pires Cordeiro.

It’s been an incredible summer at our SFArtsED summer camps, and yesterday, our final Broadway Bound group performed a tribute to the great composer Harold Arlen that raised the roof of our summer home at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay. Congratulations to all the artists involved.

This year, the San Francisco Art Book Fair celebrates its 10th anniversary, and we're excited to partner with Minnesota Street Project Foundation to bring two exciting workshops to life!

Friday, July 24: 12pm - 5pm
Origami Zine-in-a-Box with C.K.Itamura

Join SFArtsED artist-mentor C.K.Itamura and create a unique origami zine-in-a-box. Learn how to use Japanese origami, colorful papers, and a small box to make an expandable caterpillar-style zine that you can fill with your own stories, illustrations, manga, poetry, and more. This family friendly, drop-in workshop is free and open to the public. Space is limited. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Woodblock Printing Workshop with Joe Ferriso

Join SF Bay Area artist and toy designer (Jafies Joiners) Joe Ferriso for a woodblock printing workshop combining pattern, paint, and play! Visitors are encouraged to experiment with mark-making to create geometric patterns and design and build colorful and symbolic worlds on paper. Use Ferriso’s custom-made wood stamps and create your own print to take home. Then, make your mark on the wall, contributing to a collaborative installation that other SFABF visitors can enjoy all weekend! Space is limited. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

SFArtsED Family Artmaking Table & Artist-Mentor Pop-Up

On Satuday and Sunday of the Fair, visitors will have a chance to participate in free artmaking activities, featuring printing, collage, bookmaking, and paper-based activities designed and facilitated by SFArtsED artist-mentors (who will also be sharing one-of-a-kind and editioned prints and other works for sale). Drop-in visitors of all ages are welcome.

FREE WORKSHOP ALERT!
Wire & Paper Birds with Joe Melamed
Saturday, July 18, 2–4PM
SFArtsED gallery, 1275 Minnesota street.

Join us this Saturday for a free, all ages sculpture workshop led by artist Joe Melamed. Using wire, paper, and other available materials, participants will have a chance to learn basic armature making, form shaping and other sculptural techniques, and create a bird of their choosing. From domesticated chickens to wild eagles and mythical thunderbirds, the sky is the limit! Materials will be provided, and this workshop is designed for all ages.

Joe Melamed is a sculptor based in Oakland, CA. His studio practice ranges from furniture making to mold-making, figurative sculpture, two dimensional work and beyond. Joe often combines metal with materials found in his everyday life to recreate moments from the mundane. A friend eating a hamburger, a stranger taking a call on their cellphone, or runaway cluckers are all situations that are often rendered life-size, fusing technical metal fabrication with the playfulness of paper mache and other media. Having received his MFA from San Francisco Art Institute, Joe has taught sculpture at California College of the Arts elsewhere.
