Metal Arts Guild SF It was founded in 1951 by a small group of artists working in the relatively new field of art jewelry and metal.

The Metal Arts Guild of The Bay Area, a non-profit organization, focuses on promoting the recognition of metalwork as an art form and offering Bay Area jewelers and metal artists a network of information, education and support. History:
The Metal Arts Guild (MAG) is an independent, non-profit, educational organization of people who are skilled, interested, or share in the production and exhibition of metals. Early members included Margaret de Patta, merry renk, Francis Spensen, Byron Wilson, Vera Allison, Bob Winston, Irena Brynner, Peter and Virginia Macchiarini and Florence Resnikoff. Today MAG has over 200 members and is comprised of professional and emerging artists, educators, students, collectors, and writers. After experimenting with different categories of membership, the Guild offered membership to everyone interested in art metals, whether they were artists, teachers, students, hobbyists or collectors. MAG began sponsoring juried exhibitions from 1951 onwards, participating in shows put on by the San Francisco Art Commission, Bay Area museums, Fort Mason, and currently at such locations as the Oakland Museum’s Collectors Gallery and the Richmond Art Center.

CCSF’s Jewelry Metal Arts program is growing, and Jen Moore is part of why. The program just moved into a brand-new studio in the STEAM building, with expanded class offerings for the first time in a decade.

Jen holds an MFA in Jewelry and Metals from San Diego State University and a BA in Art History from UC Berkeley. She teaches across the full range of the program: fabrication at every level, from complete beginners to advanced students, plus a specialized casting class.

Outside the classroom, Jennifer’s own work draws on historic jewelry forms and Victorian optical toys, brooches and necklaces that hide text, distort it, or only reveal it in fragments, exploring how we read each other and what gets lost in translation.

Jack da Silva’s first metalworking lesson wasn’t in a studio. It was a bucket of bent nails his father handed him to straighten for the family’s mausoleum business.
“When my Dad handed me a bucket of bent nails, I was not thrilled,” Jack says. “Yet it helped me learn how to grip the hammer handle, develop the direction and sequence of hammer blows, and protect my hands.”
That’s forty years of teaching Jewelry Metal Arts later, and Jack is still at it: currently the Jewelry Metal Arts Program Coordinator and Professor at CCSF, where he’s guided the program through a global pandemic and into a brand-new studio in the STEAM building.
Jack has also spent fourteen years serving on the boards of organizations like the Society of North American Goldsmiths, the California Blacksmith Association, and our own Metal Arts Guild. From 1999 to 2008 he founded and ran MAKER, a week-long adult metal arts retreat near Pescadero that brought together renowned presenters and students side by side.

2026 METAL ARTS GUILD &  BARBARA M. BERK SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline October 31, 2026

Applications are now open for the Metal Arts Guild & Barbara M. Berk $1,000 Scholarships. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a metal arts curriculum at a San Francisco Bay Area school. Scholarship funds are to be used for enrollment fees, materials, and tools related to your classwork. 

Applicants are asked to answer a few questions on the application form, provide photos of their work in metal, and seek a letter of recommendation from their metals instructor. Instructors should email their recommendation to: [email protected].

Applications will be judged by a jury of professional metal artists. Applicants will be informed by the end of November if they have been selected for a scholarship.

Please read the application form for more information and requirements.

The deadline to apply is October 31st, 2026.

Big WIN for the Bay Area metal arts community. 🎉

Our local City College of San Francisco’s Jewelry Metal Arts program just moved into a brand-new studio in the STEAM building, and for the first time in a decade, JMA class offerings are expanding. This is exactly the kind of growth momentum our community needs.
