The vision of San Francisco Achievers (SFA) is that every African American young man in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUDS) has the education, skills, and resilience to thrive in life. SFA’s mission is to empower African American young men in SFUSD to lead and thrive in education and beyond by providing college scholarships, targeted supports, and resources.

School starts Monday, and we could not be more excited to cheer on our Achievers and Scholars as they head back to SFUSD classrooms and college campuses across the country.

This summer was one for the books. Our Achievers earned real paychecks in our first-ever paid internship program with True Pine Construction, Hack the Hood, and Enterprise for Youth. Twenty Achievers flew to Southern California for Next Chapter LA 2026 and walked six college campuses. We spent Career Day with the Golden State Warriors. And on Saturday, community filled Spark Social SF for our annual Friends & Family Day, a joyful afternoon of food, games, and a visit from the San Francisco Fire Department.

To every Achiever and Scholar reading this: we are so proud of you. Have a happy, healthy, and wildly successful year. We cannot wait to see what you do.

The college tour is what makes the headlines. The days around it are where our young men grow into themselves.

For many of our Achievers, this trip meant a rare chance to experience places that shape American life.

🎡 Monday. Santa Monica Pier. An afternoon to slow down, feel the ocean air, and take in the coast.
⛳ Tuesday. Top Golf in Long Beach. Some had never held a club before. By the end, they were coaching each other on grip and stance.
🍽️ Wednesday. A formal dinner at Dal Rae, a classic Southern California steakhouse. Ties, white tablecloths, real conversation across the table. Practice for the rooms they will walk into later in life.
🎢 Thursday. Six Flags Magic Mountain. Capes on, coasters running, twenty young men spending the day the way teenagers should get to spend a day sometimes: laughing, screaming, being fully themselves.

Camaraderie is built here. Trust is built here. This is where the group becomes a brotherhood.

We meet our young men where they are because the whole person matters. Their minds. Their futures. Their joy. Their rest. Their sense that the world is theirs to walk into.

Day 3, stop six of six. Our 20 Achievers wrapped Next Chapter LA 2026 at the University of La Verne.

Alaina Dunn, VP of Enrollment Management, opened the day with a candid conversation about admissions, financial aid, and campus support. Our young men then headed to the dining hall for lunch alongside current Leopards, closing the tour the way a college day should end: with real food, real people, and a real sense of belonging.

Six campuses. Three days. Twenty young men who now carry pictures in their heads of what their college life could look like.

Day 3 of Next Chapter LA 2026 took our 20 Achievers to Pomona College in Claremont, stop five of six on the tour.

Pomona is one of the most respected liberal arts colleges in the country, tucked at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Our young men started the morning inside an info session, asking real questions about admissions, financial aid, and student life. Then they walked the campus with a guide, past Alexander Hall and across quads that felt both grand and personal.

Exposure changes what feels possible. One campus at a time, our Achievers are seeing themselves in places they may never have pictured before.

Day two of Next Chapter LA 2026 brought our 20 Achievers to Charles Drew U

At Charles Drew, they were welcomed into a conference room built for real conversation. Gift bags, a welcome slide, and a team ready to talk medicine, science, and career pathways in health. In the simulation lab, our young men saw the tools future doctors and nurses use to train.

Across town at USC, they walked the campus and saw what daily life at a major university feels like, and they started picturing themselves in it.

The afternoon of day one brought our Achievers to California State University, Los Angeles, and their tour guide made the whole stop full circle.

D'Antonio P. is a rising junior at CSU LA and one of our SFA College Scholars. Today he walked our young men through the campus he calls his own, showing them what's possible when someone invests in you and you invest right back in your own future.
This is why we do college tours. Not to check a box, but to help our young men picture themselves on a campus, in a classroom, in a career. D'Antonio was that picture today.

Day one of The Next Chapter: LA 2026 is officially in the books, and our Achievers spent it at California State University, Fullerton.

Their very first exercise on the tour was a reflection page in their workbook honoring Dr. Henry Safrit, the founder of San Francisco Achievers. Dr. Safrit believed African American young men in San Francisco deserved the same access to education and opportunity as anyone else, and he invested in scholars he had never met.

We asked our young men what it means when someone invests in their future expecting nothing in return except their success. Their answers, written in their own hand, spoke of being cared for and pushed to try harder because someone is behind them.

Dr. Safrit passed away, but his belief traveled with our young men to Fullerton this morning. It will travel with them to five more campuses this week. We stay.

Today is our Executive Director's birthday, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the woman who leads San Francisco Achievers with heart, vision, and steady commitment to our young men.

Danielle meets our Achievers where they are, on their campuses, in their moments of doubt, and in their milestones of joy. This year, 100% of our seniors graduated high school and matriculated to college, and 25 new Scholars joined our community. Since our founding, we have invested more than $6 million in the young men we serve.

Behind every one of those milestones is Danielle's belief that when we invest in young men with purpose, everything else follows.

Happy birthday, Danielle. We are grateful to grow this work alongside you.
