Navigating window specifications for Certified Passive House buildings can present unique challenges for designers, architects, energy modelers, and builders compared to standard California energy codes.

In this session, Steve Mann, principal of Home Energy Services and a credentialed PHI Certifier and Trainer, will demystify these requirements and provide clear guidance to make the window selection process as seamless as possible.

Most California homes lost in WUI fires don't burn from direct flame contact. They burn from ember intrusion through the envelope.
Marcos Santa Ana of Alloi Architecture + Construction makes the case that Passive House detailing already does most of the work fire hardening asks for. Airtight envelopes. Sealed penetrations. Continuous insulation. Same details, different vocabulary.
Drawing on a Pacific Palisades retrofit during the January 2025 fires and new-construction prototypes for Altadena rebuilds, Marcos walks through assembly specs for roofs, walls, glazing, vents, and crawl spaces, plus the layered active systems that extend protection after the fire front passes.
