The same Passive House design can model very differently in PHPP, WUFI Passive and CBECC. Our October Community Meeting looks at where, and why.
Becca Evans of Frontier Energy supports California energy code development through Codes and Standards Enhancement (CASE) and Reach Code work, and she recently led an analysis comparing Passive House and Title 24. She walks through single-family and multifamily prototypes across all 16 California climate zones: site energy, peak demand, compliance outcomes, and how a measure like infiltration changes the result from one tool to the next. The work also supports the state's evaluation of Passive House compliance pathways under AB 368.

Passive House | Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant Interest Form Fall 26

The PG&E Energy Center is pleased to offer the Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant training and certification presented by The Passive House Network (PHN). This professional Passive House course is well suited for architects, engineers, and building professionals and is supported by the 30-year history of global technical leadership of the Passive House Institute.

The upcoming fall cohort starts on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, with an exam scheduled in December 2026 (Date TBD).

Doing Passive House well is usually described as the disciplined ex*****on of building science we already know. Affordable multifamily is where that description gets tested.

At our September Community Meeting, Sharon Libby and Marty Houston of Walsh Construction walk through what their crews actually learned on the ground: holding airtightness continuity at the wall-to-parapet interface, what continuous exterior insulation costs you in constructability at steep slope roofs, how climate-specific design data changed their assembly and fenestration choices, and where MEP penetrations open unintended air flow paths through the enclosure.

Congratulations to PARAVANT Architects and Certified Passive House Consultant Christian Kienapfel! 🏆

Their Los Angeles project — "Small-Scale Density, Big Performance: SB9, ADU & EnerPHit Retrofit" — has been honored with the Climate Positive Honor Award at the 2026 AIA Los Angeles Residential Architecture Awards.

The jury praised it as "a highly intentional sustainability project that integrates rigorous high-performance standards from the outset while retaining portions of the existing structure to reduce embodied carbon."

The certified Passive House pairs an EnerPHit retrofit and addition to the existing structure with new SB9 and ADU density — a working example of how California's small-lot housing tools can deliver exceptional performance on an infill site.
