Soundwave SF is honored to announce our recipient of the 2024 Buzz Award - Joel St. Julien!

Joel St. Julien is a Haitian-American composer, sound and video artist based in San Francisco. Joel has written music for documentaries, short / feature films, podcasts, and dance. He is a firm believer in experimentation/fusion with acoustic and electronic elements in sound oscillating through escapism and the mysticism of the present tense: music both being art and spiritual practice.
Joel has shared music at the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, Stanford University’s CCRMA, Gray Area, CounterPulse Festival, Land and Sea Gallery, Re:Sound, The Lab, and Kadist Gallery. His music has also been featured and reviewed in Resident Advisor, The Wire, Disquiet, KQED, Foxy Digitalis, a closer listen, Dublab, and many more.
Joel has released music independently and on Land and Sea, Dragon's Eye Recordings, Beached Records, and CST Imprint.

The BUZZ Award is a prize that recognizes promising San Francisco Bay Area artists that are making a creative impact with their sound-related work and have demonstrated great potential and commitment to performance and immersive art.

T O N I G H T!!!

See /handlogic premiere their U.S. tour on October 26th at Gray Area. Link in bio!

⁄handlogic is an experimental pop project born in Florence, Italy in 2016.
From its inception, it gained prominence in the national underground scene thanks to its victory in several nationwide contests and to the debut EP receiving excellent feedback from the music press (Mucchio Selvaggio, Rumore, Blowup, La Repubblica). The songs were described as “[…] multiply inspired, with the experimental approach of trip hop, the refined sound of that R&B that refuses to conform to market models […] all of it coordinated by a sensibility for interlocking sounds and jazzy exchanges between instruments”.
During the following two years the band embarked on a long tour with over 130 gigs across the whole of Italy, reaching Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. ⁄handlogic performed on the stages of prominent festivals, played live in the state broadcasters Rai Radio 1 and Radio 2 studios, and opened for artists such as Primal Scream and Paolo Fresu.
In 2018 the idea sparked to revisit the band’s material in collaboration with eleven artists from the Italian scene, such as Alberto Ferrari (Verdena), Andrea Appino (Zen Circus) and Giulio Ragno Favero (Teatro degli Orrori); this culminated in a visionary and multiform collection of remixes.
⁄handlogic’s debut full-length “Nobodypanic” was released in May 2019 with Woodworm Label, followed by a tour that was cut short by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The forced pause was used by the band to work on a new, Italian language record, which will be released in the winter of 2022.

TONIGHT!! Come experience King Tides, an evening of musical performances and video by artists who live and work near coasts. This year we present an international dialogue between Italy and the Bay Area- two regions that owe much of their culture to oceans. Like the king tides which occur when the orbits and alignment of the earth, moon, and sun combine to produce the greatest tidal effects of the year, artists and creatives often preview how our cultural landscapes will change and evolve. As sea levels continue to rise across the globe, artists across borders must strengthen our networks and deepen solidarity in order to address the climate issues of our time.

Composer and producer Dario Slavazza lives on a sailboat in San Francisco’s North Bay. He works as a music curator for global brands such as FitBit, Obe, and Asics, and leads water excursions for first-timers. A voracious reader, especially of the philosophical implications of entropy, he is also a classically trained saxophonist and recording studio engineer. His sound and visual art are largely inspired by renaissance sculpture, the impressionist and new wave cinema.
