Save the Date! August Weaving Workshop Coming Soon!

We are excited to announce that our next Ilokano Inabel weaving workshop will take place this August at the International Hotel
Manilatown Center.

We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming community response to this series. Both our June and July workshops sold out shortly after registration opened, reflecting a growing interest in learning, preserving, and celebrating Philippine weaving traditions.

Whether participants come to explore their heritage, learn a new skill, connect with community, or simply enjoy a creative afternoon, these workshops have become a welcoming space for cultural exchange, storytelling, and hands-on learning.

Our August session will continue this journey through Ilokano weaving traditions, offering another opportunity to learn directly from teaching artist Dana Sabaria.

Stay tuned for workshop details and registration information. We look forward to weaving more stories together this August.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Weaving Stories Together: An Introduction to the Ilokano Kusikus Pattern at the International Hotel Manilatown Center.

We were thrilled by the strong community interest and enthusiastic participation in this workshop. Under the guidance of teaching artist Dana Sabaria, participants explored the Ilokano kusikus (“whirlpool”) pattern while learning the fundamentals of Inabel weaving, cultural storytelling, and creative expression.

Students shared a positive and rewarding experience as they learned new skills, connected with one another, and created their own woven pieces. It was an opportunity to engage with Philippine cultural traditions in a hands-on and meaningful way.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this gathering such a warm and inspiring celebration of creativity, culture, and community. We look forward to weaving more stories together in the months ahead.

“API Heritage Month is in May, but we celebrate our communities 365 Days a year. Rainbow Market in San Francisco prominently displayed a picture of Manilatown Poet and Activist Al Robles in the month of May to honor his contributions to the Asian American community as a poet, activist, historian and one of the founders of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. The Manilatown Heritage Foundation continues to honor his legacy and the legacy of others in the community whose contributions and spirit live with us 365 days a year.“ ~ Tony Robles

Manilatown Heritage Foundation mourns the passing of our beloved teacher, mentor, elder, and friend, Cirilo “Manong Sapi” Bawer.

For many years, Manong Sapi generously shared the music, stories, songs, and cultural traditions of the Kalinga people with our community. As a 2024 Resident Artist at the International Hotel Manilatown Center, he helped connect generations through workshops, performances, and mentorship rooted in ancestral knowledge and living tradition.

For our Executive Director, Caroline Julia Cabading, Manong Sapi was more than a teacher-he was a trusted mentor, guide, and father figure whose wisdom, kindness, and humor left a lasting impact.

Because of his generosity, Kalinga music, songs, and cultural teachings have found a lasting home within the Manilatown community. His legacy lives on in every student he taught, every song he shared, and every gathering where his teachings continue to be practiced.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all whose lives were touched by his remarkable spirit.

Thank you, Manong Sapi, for your friendship, guidance, and unwavering commitment to your people and culture.
We will honor your memory by carrying your teachings forward with gratitude and care.

Agyamanak Unay Unay, Manong Sapi.
We will remember you always.

🧶Weaving Stories Together: An Introduction to the Ilokano Kusikus Pattern

Join us on June 14, Sunday 1:00PM at the International Hotel Manilatown Center, for a beginner-friendly Ilokano Inabel weaving workshop led by guest teaching artist Dana Sabaria.

Together, we’ll explore the kusikus or
“whirlpool” pattern while learning the foundations of weaving through shared storytelling, memory, and cultural practice. Rooted in the living tradition of Philippine weaving, this workshop creates space for community, reflection, and connection across generations and diasporic experiences.
Participants will learn basic weaving techniques with a focus on warp floats and create their very own kusikus coaster - either to take home or contribute to a community art exhibit opening August 4 at Manilatown.
Whether you’re completely new to weaving, looking to deepen your skills, or simply curious to learn something new, this workshop welcomes you.

✨All materials will be provided.

At the International Hotel Manilatown Center, history is not something locked away in books or behind museum glass—it is something young people can walk through, listen to, question, and carry forward.
Students from the Galing Bata program visited the International Hotel Manilatown Center as part of Manilatown Heritage Foundation’s ongoing youth education and cultural learning programs. Through stories of the I-Hotel struggle, community resistance, migration, and belonging, students were invited to see San Francisco history not as distant events, but as living experiences shaped by people who fought to protect community, dignity, and home.
Tours are part of Manilatown Heritage Foundation’s programming and the Manilatown Academy pillar,
which includes educational and cultural programs such as the I-Hotel Historic Walking Tour, Annual I-Hotel Commemoration, Alternative Spring Breaks, Manilatown Ancestral workshops, and hands-on classes in pre-colonial Philippine music, dance, crafts, language, storytelling, and visual arts.
For many young people, visits like these become more than field trips. They become moments of recognition and discovery-where culture, identity, and intergenerational memory begin to connect in meaningful ways. By learning the stories of those who came before them, youth are reminded that community history matters, their voices matter, and they too have a role in shaping what is remembered and protected for future generations.
At Manilatown, education is not only about learning the past. It is about building deeper understanding, cultural pride, and a sense of responsibility to one another.
