San Francisco Girls Chorus

San Francisco Girls Chorus www.sfgirlschorus.org For more than 30 years, the San Francisco Girls Chorus has been recognized as one of the world’s most respected vocal ensembles.

Its level of training, performance, quality, range, and leadership in commissioning music for treble voices are lauded by musicians, critics, and audiences. San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas says, “The San Francisco Girls Chorus is a treasure. Their training, musicality, and vibrant spirit are evident whenever they perform. I have enjoyed our long association and look for

ward to many years of collaboration.”

SFGC’s 30th Anniversary season, 2008-2009, culminated in a performance in President Barack Obama’s swearing-in ceremony, and a debut concert at Alice Tully Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center. Founded in 1978, the San Francisco Girls Chorus has become a regional center for choral music education and performance for girls and young women ages 5-18. 400 singers from all nine Bay Area counties participate in this internationally recognized program, deemed “a model in the country for training girls’ voices” by the California Arts Council. The organization consists of a professional level performance, recording and touring ensemble; the four-level Chorus School training program; and a Preparatory Chorus for 5-7 year olds. SFGC has won many honors, including the prestigious Margaret Hillis Award and three ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming in 1999, 2004 and 2011. The Girls Chorus is invited annually to perform with musical organizations including San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and others. The Chorus has been honored to sing at many national and international venues, including the World Choral Symposium in Kyoto, Japan in 2005. SFGC has been featured at the American Choral Directors Association Western Division Convention in Salt Lake City and represented North America in the prestigious World Vision Children’s Choir Festival in Seoul, Korea, and in the Gateway to Music Festival at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. The Chorus School offers a program of unparalleled excellence, designed to take young girls from their first introduction to the art of choral singing through a full course of choral/vocal instruction. This comprehensive music education includes the study and development of choral artistry, vocal technique, music theory, music history, and performing style. The discipline, teamwork, and concentration young girls learn in the Chorus School rehearsals and performances instill in them the values necessary for high achievement in music and in life. SFGC’s discography continues to grow with a 2-disc set Heaven and Earth. The music represents some of the greatest sacred and secular repertoire ever written for treble voices. Other recordings include: Voices of Hope and Peace, a recording with many exciting SFGC commissions; Christmas, featuring diverse holiday selections; Crossroads, a collection of world folk music; and Music from the Venetian Ospedali, a disc of Italian Baroque music of which The New Yorker described the Chorus as “tremendously accomplished.” The Chorus can also be heard on several San Francisco Symphony recordings, including five GRAMMY® Award-winners. The San Francisco Girls Chorus is represented by California Artists Management. For additional information, please contact the Chorus directly.

Traditions runs deep in our lives. Every celebration is based on a tradition that has been done year after year and is a recognition of the significance of a meaningful occasion.

With almost 50 years of legacy, SFCG has its traditions. One beautiful tradition shines in each of these photos. At the end of every Davies Symphony Hall concert, every Alum is invited on stage to join the current chorus in singing the final numbers of the performance. It's a beautiful circle which connects the unique SFGC experience.

Watching the Alumnae sing with the same joy as the youngest ones on stage is a testament to power of music and the close bonds that are built through being a part of the San Francisco Girls Chorus.

They come in at five years old, fidgety, wide-eyed, maybe a little reluctant to leave mom or dad's hand at the door. But the moment the music starts, something clicks.
That's how it begins at the San Francisco Girls Chorus.
Over the years, the Chorus becomes more than a music class. It becomes a place where a shy girl finds her voice, literally and figuratively. Where she learns to listen, to show up, to stand tall in front of an audience and trust what she's learning. Where friendships form, discipline deepens, and confidence quietly takes root.
And then, one day, she laureates. She walks across that stage not just as a singer, but as a young woman shaped by years of artistry, community, and courage.
The video below captures that world, the Training Chorus in concert, doing what they do best: becoming.

Ingrid Behrsin, SFCG Alumna, laureated in 1998 and still continues to cherish the relationships she built during her time in the Chorus. When asked about her fondest SFGC memories...

"My fondest memory was touring Italy with Chorissima in 1996 , I can't believe that was 30 years ago! A close second would have to be night sings at summer camp in Healdsburg. I have held them with me and still sing all of those songs to my boys - now 9 and 5."

Alumnae, the Heart of the Legacy

To every chorister who has ever called the SFGC home, we welcome you back. Come reconnect and reengage in that kinship and be a part of shaping the future of the chorus that helped shape you.

Legacy is built on years of hard work, dedication, commitment to a mission and the people that embody its goals. The San Francisco Girls Chorus has a rich legacy-almost 50 years of Alumni and supporters.

Megan (McQuillin) Kellogg joined the chorus at 7 years old, laureated and went on to a career in Opera and Arts Administration.

Sheila Schwartzburg was a mom, who enrolled her daughter in the chorus in 1980 and realized that the chorus was in start up mode. She went the extra mile and joined 1st Board of the chorus and helped steer the organization to what it is today.

Roots and passion this deep are what make the San Francisco Girls Chorus special.

We will be featuring Alumni stories every week. If you'd like to share your SFGC journery let us know!

Choral singing has deep roots in many cultures and serves many purposes throughout history. The act of singing together is such a communal and spiritual force. Our Artistic Director wants to make sure every voice and the power of that communal connection is heard.

Every year the San Francisco Girls Chorus commissions a new piece to expand the choral repertoire and to allow composers to share their voices, 2026 was Nicolás Lell Benavides

From the Program Notes:
"Si los riesgos del mar is a poem about risk taking and bravery. In it, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz observes that if one were to solely consider the risks of the ocean when setting sail, or the
dangers of falling off a horse when going for a ride, then no sane person would ever venture out. She says that risk takers, knowing full well the danger, leave a legacy that can outlast a single
lifetime. Bravery doesn’t mean living without fear, it means overcoming fear because the reward can be lifechanging.

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is a Mexican hero centuries ahead of her time who was no stranger to bravery. She was a polymath who wrote poetry and composed songs, and she knew that society would not easily accommodate a feminist intellectual. She joined a convent and wrote passionately about philosophy, art, and even unrequited love. The past few decades have seen a
renewed interest in her work which feels incredibly, and uncomfortably, contemporary. We have improved the world considerably, and yet there are striking similarities to what she endured. We have a lot of work to do that will require brave choices if we want a more just society."

As the season comes to a close we had a eventful packed week of sharing all of our hard work through out the year with family and friends. From our youngest to oldest, the emotions of reaching an end were on full display through music, laughter, hugs and flowers. Our laureates will go on to higher heights. Our youngest will gear up for the next season. They all will carry that special thing that can only come from this shared San Francisco Girls Chorus experience.
That is the Legacy of being a part of SFCG.

Your support throughout the years of this unique experience allows us to continue to influence the lives and paths of these young women.
