This weekend, SDA members joined tenants from across San Francisco at the SF Tenants Assembly!

As the AI boom drives up rents and displacement, tenants came together across neighborhoods to share what’s happening in our buildings, learn from tenant leaders who have been organizing and winning, and build connections with each other.

We heard about tenant associations, rent strikes, door knocking, and neighbors taking on neglected repairs, unsafe conditions, evictions, and rising rents.
SDA members brought their own experiences to the room, learned from other tenants, and made connections with people facing many of the same struggles across the city.

SDA also took the lead on accessibility planning to help make sure everyone could fully participate. Good food, interpretation in Cantonese, Spanish, and Tagalog, breakout groups, new connections, and plans to keep organizing together.

San Francisco is our home. We’re here to stay.

Take action: Tell SF's City Attorney to withdraw its dangerous stance on disability rights!

In its briefing before the Ninth Circuit in Kirola v. City and County of San Francisco, the City claims:

- Federal accessibility standards — the detailed rules that say how wide a doorway must be, how steep a ramp can be, how much room a wheelchair needs to turn around — are no longer binding on courts.
- Those protections don't clearly apply to parks, playgrounds, and recreation facilities the City builds
- No one can sue to enforce construction standards for new or altered facilities
- Disability discrimination claims should require proof of "intentional" discrimination

This is unacceptable. The federal access standards are foundational to disabled people’s participation in public life. The City is blatantly trying to undermine the strength of essential disability rights laws. Sign on to this letter today in opposition and share with your friends and neighbors!

Earlier this week, SDA staff and members rallied and met with legislators in Sacramento, along with over 200 people from all around California. Together, we urged our elected officials to save funding for public transit, housing, and clean air/water programs that are being defunded across the state — including free Muni for seniors, disabled people, and youth — after the California Air Resources Board rerouted that funding for handouts to big oil.

SDA's Survival School is back at two different YMCA sites in San Francisco!

In June, we discussed fall prevention and how income-qualified SF residents can request a home safety assessment and $1000+ of free home safety modifications! We also covered accessible and cost-saving transit options including Paratransit, taxi card, essential trip card, shop-a-round shuttle, and more.

“[In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)] is a lifeline, allowing them to provide care themselves or hire a caregiver for part of the day. If they lose that, families will be plunged into economic precarity, with caregivers forced to take on additional jobs while their disabled and ill family members go without care… Without this, people become homeless. They lose their income. They lose their stability. Whatever tiny safety net they had is gone… It’s just cruel.”

Still talking about this because the uncertainty withholding millions in Medicaid funding from California and Minnesota isn’t just an abstract inconvenience — it’s the loss of care, AND the loss of that care in one’s own home and community.

Hands off IHSS.
