This past week we hosted the Cigarette “Butt Bash” in collaboration with the UC Riverside Sustainability Program. Volunteers went around to cigarette hot spots and abuse areas on campus and collected the cigarette butts. We also provided volunteers with smoking cessation kits they could use to pass out to people who were actively smoking on campus. This was a two day collection process. We were shocked to discover nearly 500 cigarette butts in only two hours. As global health leaders, we recognize it is our responsibility to exercise leadership through the creation of a smoke-free environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
