Nudge Unit SF Help make SF awesome. First mission: keep Dalores Park clean for a whole (sunny) day!

Sorry for being away for so long, it's been a complicated time. I'll be back there on Saturday to do my last test, hopefully with some help this time.

I'm going to be bringing along a megaphone this time to yell at people if they leave stuff behind. I'm not sure this is the best thing to do but I have to test it out if I'm going to be truthful to this "test things and see what works" job.

We're taking a weekend off. The next test will include a little shaming test. A fun one we hope. Orange Pompoms and a little song and dance when there is trash strewn around.

Not sure it is the best idea, but we need to do different tests to understand what will work in the end.

Anyone have ideas?

Did a second test on Saturday. Again, single person test.

I'd like to try one more with orange pompoms and a song and dance for people who aren't doing the right thing.

Just to test if the carrot or the stick is better.

Thoughts?

First test at Dolores. 20 large orange bags given out. Mostly to large groups. I gave up on the super-large as they're just too heavy to carry around.

Its a very quiet day today, maybe 1/6 normal. 20 bags seemed enough for half the park given the sparcity.

The sales pitch: "Hi. Any need of a trash bag?"

"Hmm.. Yeah actually."

"Here we go. I just ask that when you leave you find someone else who looks like they need it. And don't forget the bottle caps, they're always hiding. Have an awesome day!"

I'm going to stay around to sunset for test results. Maybe possible to use lower side of park as a control, although different kinds of groups may gravitate to different areas.

Only one person asked if I was with the city.

Hmmm. Seems it's going to be a pretty rainy weekend. Saturday may be a few people around, but not a bonanza at Dolores.

Anyone want to join for a quick test run on Saturday?

So, the first mission idea is this. Help people to keep Dolores Park clean for a whole day, a whole sunny, beautiful, awesome day.

Why? Because I'm sick of seeing news articles about this, and I'm sick of hearing people complain about it!

How? By handing out orange trash bags and then asking them nicely to use them. And asking them even nicer if they could put not just their own in there, but any trash they see.

I have 150 bright orange bags that just arrived. 100 see-through ones and 50 stronger non-see-through ones. I want to try doing an A/B test to see which ones are used, and also make sure the cheaper one's don't break.

Should we suggest people take the bags with them? Or maybe just tie them and put them next to bins on their way out?

I'll make an event when we think it might be a day to do it.

How about some cardboard animal heads? Printed in Orange of course! (No, no idea why orange. It just seemed like the right color)
