We asked the herd what has been their favorite part of summer so far. This is what they answered…🐴

🥕Phoebe: The snacks. Specifically, the carrots given during our grooming and ground activities.

💤Magpie: The midday nap in between the morning and afternoon sessions.

❤️Pete: You know, I’m a loving horse, so I always welcome love in return.

🪴 Lola: Oh, well... escaping to eat Sarah’s plants... Sorry, not sorry—they’re delicious!!! 🤤

The conclusion of our summer study? Our therapy horses are experts at living their best lives while taking incredible care of our riders. We couldn’t ask for a more patient, loving, and... yes spolied herd. 😏✨

From Watching to Doing: How Confidence Grows 🐴❤️

At Brady, learning to groom a horse is a journey of small steps and big milestones.

👀 First, watching Sarah demonstrate how it’s done.
🐴 Then, picking a hoof per instructions.
🪮 Next, brushing a horse with guidance.
💕 With growing confidence, taking the lead while Sarah stands by, ready to help.
🤝 Then, grooming alongside other kids, learning from one another.
✨ And finally, doing it all on their own!

What looks like a simple barn chore is so much more. Along the way, children practice coordination, focus, communication, responsibility, and trust.

With each new skill comes a growing sense of independence and pride.

Real progress is gradual, individualized, and worth celebrating at every stage. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs happen in the smaller moments.

“When we first looked into therapeutic riding, another organization told us they didn’t feel comfortable taking on a child like Teagan unless she could go six months seizure-free.

We were deeply discouraged. Teagan has multiple disabilities, including treatment-resistant epilepsy—freedom from seizures isn’t a realistic milestone for her.

In hindsight, I am thankful we were turned away. Because it led us to Brady.

They welcomed Teagan with open arms and saddles. They didn’t see limitations or liability—they saw a child who is ABLE.

Today, our entire family gets to watch Teagan blossom on the trails and in the arena. From the calming outdoor greenery at the zoo, to warm tea and laughter with Hugh and Sarah, to watching our daughter thrive alongside patient volunteers and darling horses—Brady has given us something rare in the special needs world: a place where the whole family feels held, celebrated, and at home.”

Sometimes a few seconds can represent weeks of hard work.

When a rider first comes to Brady, simply finding their balance on a moving horse can take enormous concentration. Every step asks the body to adjust, strengthen, and respond.

Then comes the moment when a rider realizes: “I can do this.” Maybe one hand comes off the saddle. Then two.

Sitting upright independently may look like a small milestone from the sidelines. For a rider who has been working toward greater balance and core strength, it can be a very big one.

And that’s one of the things we love about horses: They give our riders a reason to keep trying.

Small moment. Big milestone.🐴 Building Confidence Through Connection

Some victories happen quietly. A rider sits a little taller. Lets go for a moment. Realizes they’re balanced. And suddenly you see that wonderful expression that says, I did it.

At Brady, we get to witness moments like these every week and celebrate every step it took to get there.

Why do we stretch in the saddle? 🤸🐎

Mounted stretches and exercises are an important part of lessons at Brady. Reaching, twisting, balancing, and changing positions help riders work on balance, coordination, flexibility and range of motion, motor control, body awareness, motor planning, and more.

And because all of this is happening on horseback, the horse’s movement encourages riders to adjust their bodies, find their balance, and build greater awareness and control of how they move.

Every rider comes to Brady with their own strengths, goals, and needs, so these exercises can be adapted, too. Whether that means reaching a little farther, using a rubber chicken as a target, or having a sidewalker there for extra support, each stretch is another opportunity to build confidence, independence, and new skills through their partnership with the horse.

Sometimes the most important lessons happen on the ground:
Brush —> Pause —> Notice how the horse responds —> Try again.

Caring for a horse creates opportunities to practice:
* Focus
* Patience
* Communication
* Empathy
* Responsibility

And there’s something else that’s harder to put into words: relationship. A horse doesn’t care about grades, diagnoses, popularity, or whether you’re having a difficult day. They respond to the person standing in front of them.

At Brady, riding is only part of the story. Connection is at the heart of it.

Ask a Brady rider what they love most about coming to the barn and the answer isn’t always “riding.” Sometimes it’s brushing their horse. Feeding them. Learning their personality. Or simply spending time beside them.

Because the relationship itself can be part of the experience.
