Center for Youth Wellness

Center for Youth Wellness Health begins with hope. We heal children’s brains and bodies by piloting treatments for toxic stress and sharing our findings nationally.

The Center for Youth Wellness "CYW" is part of a national effort to revolutionize pediatric medicine and transform the way society responds to kids exposed to significant adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress. CYW was founded by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris in 2012, created to respond to an urgent public health issue: early adversity harms the developing brains and bodies of children. Now led

by Gatanya Arnic, an executive with more than fifteen years of experience in leadership development and healthcare, Dr. Burke Harris’s mission continues through CYW's current work. In partnership with Bayview Child Health Center, we screen every young person we see for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that we know can lead to toxic stress and lifelong problems with health, wellness and learning. We prevent toxic stress by raising awareness among those who can make a difference: from parents and pediatricians to policy makers.

Thank you for your support during 2020! Yesterday was a great way to kickstart our end of the year fundraising.

Support from you means that we can continue to serve children and their families in San Francisco and that we can continue to work with pediatric clinicians, educators, parents, policymakers and other child-serving professionals and advocates to implement universal screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and to treat the effects of toxic stress.

Important points made by Angelina Jolie in this Time editorial on the secondary impacts of COVID-19 on children sheltering in place: "Even though we are physically separated from each other under lockdown, we can make a point of calling family or friends, particularly where 'we might have concerns that someone is vulnerable.'"

Children seem to be less susceptible to the coronavirus. But Angelina Jolie writes about how the pandemic still puts many of them at risk.
