Assessor-Recorder Joaquín Torres to host free financial empowerment event

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – With many residents facing concerns about the cost of living and affordability here in San Francisco, Assessor-Recorder Joaquín Torres will host the 2026 Family Wealth Conference, a one-stop shop for San Franciscans looking for free and credible resources to help them build wealth and stay in the city they call home.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
Estate planning, in depth. Estate plans routinely cost thousands of dollars, and families without one risk losing tens of thousands more in probate court. For many San Francisco households, that gap is the difference between passing a home to the next generation and being displaced from the city entirely. The conference connects residents directly to free and low-cost legal services to close it. This session is part of the Assessor-Recorder's Estate Planning Program, which provides San Franciscans with free or low-cost estate plans.
Remarks from MyPath CEO Margaret Libby on economic mobility and financial empowerment for youth from communities historically excluded from financial access, and the programs available now to San Francisco youth and families.
Panel: the financial reality for women heading households. The Commission on the Status of Women and the SF Economic Justice Center in the Treasurer & Tax Collector's Office examine the current state of gender equity and spotlight practical strategies for building wealth and overcoming systemic barriers.
Your property tax assessment, explained. Presentation on the laws that govern property assessment in California, such as Proposition 13, filing for a temporary decline in value, available tax exemptions, and how Proposition 19 changed the rules for passing property from one generation to the next.
