My Style of Learning supports low-income, first-generation college-bound high school students by improving their academic skills, developing their social responsibility, and assisting them in making informed decisions about higher education. The MSOL Program is a free college preparatory after-school program that works with first-generation college-bound students in grades 9-12, preparing them to
pursue higher education through career exploration and academic achievement. Services include: weekly workshops covering topics ranging from study skills to college exploration, mentoring, after-school tutoring, SAT preparatory classes, college tours, social events, and much more. In addition, all 12th grade participants receive weekly individual advising on exploring college majors and potential careers, and completing college and financial assistance applications. Applications are required and accepted on a rolling basis. AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS:
GOAL SETTING, TIME MANAGEMENT & "MY STYLE OF LEARNING" WORKSHOP
This introductory workshop aims to determine each student's strengths, interests, and motivation which will be used to achieve each student's academic and artistic goals and improve in areas that need attention. Each student will set some short-term and long-term goals. This workshop will help determine how each student learns best (visually or through listening, etc.) and solves problems. ACADEMIC TUTORING
After-school homework help-line, online video conference, or in-person sessions are available to each student to help study and complete their homework. GRADUATION/COLLEGE PLANNING
Each student will prepare a list of required courses (math, english, science, history) to graduate from high school and choose from elective courses (primary and back-up) that will cater to each student's interests and possible career goals. Plan to take SATs and other required tests. Visit colleges and shadow college classes. CAREER MENTORING/WORKPLACE SHADOWING
Each student will be paired with mentors who they may contact for academic, artistic, and career mentoring. Resume-building will also be incorporated in this program. ARTISTIC EXPRESSION MENTORS & WORKSHOP
Each student will be asked what they would like to learn that is not available at school. My Style of Learning will then invite speakers or mentors or prepare workshops to cater to the students' interests. For example, if a student wanted to learn how to become a chef, then we will find a mentor who is a chef to speak with the student individually or through a group workshop. The student may also be able to shadow that mentor at work. If a student wanted to learn how to play tennis, play the guitar, or learn how to dance, we will contact not only mentors, but members from our local community to help provide one or two complimentary lessons. If the student would like more lessons but cannot afford it, we will work with our community partners to provide opportunities for the students who show improvement in their grades. *One of the main goals of My Style of Learning is to motivate students to succeed academically through or in conjunction with the pursuit of artistic expression. COMMUNITY SERVICE/INVOLVEMENT
We encourage students to participate in community events not only to foster community service but also to expand their knowledge of resources and network in their community. FIELD TRIPS
Students learn about different professions, ideas and opportunities when they travel outside their own neighborhoods. A field trip can awaken the desire in a student to try new things and pursue previously unconsidered dreams. Field trips can introduce students to job opportunities and can spark new interests and passions.
