Clarence B. Jones passed away on Friday, May 22. Just 20 days earlier, Dr. Jones was an honored guest at SFFILM’s 69th San Francisco International Film Festival for a screening of THE BADDEST SPEECHWRITER OF ALL, a documentary about his life co-directed by Stephen Curry and Ben Proudfoot. The audience showered him with two standing ovations and delighted in his stories about his life.

As a musician himself, Dr. Jones always made time for artists passing through the city and we were lucky enough to celebrate Opening Night of Doc Stories in 2021 with his friend and colleague director Stanley Nelson for his film ATTICA. We are grateful for his legacy; he will be missed.

Science  🤝 Cinema

We are so proud to celebrate the 2025 SFFILM Sloan Science in Cinema Initiative Fellowship and  Grant Recipients!

Pairing filmmakers with science advisors helps to better represent science on the big screen while also investing in  the creative discovery process for the filmmakers themselves. The stories they are working on capture everything from anthropology, engineering, sound ecology, and  NASA. Congratulations to Justin, Destiny, Sid and Aditya, and Lane, and thank you to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation!

We closed out the 69th SFFILM Festival in the most unexpected, perfect way: a Star Wars Day screening of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK at the newly renovated Castro Theatre. Followed by an onstage conversation with the one and only Anthony Daniels, the man behind C-3PO in every single chapter of the Saga.

Thank you to Anthony and SFFILM Board VP Howard Roffman for a night that was truly out of this galaxy. And to our incredible collaborators , , and ,  may the Force (and the film festival) be with you. Always. 🪐

Becoming an adult isn’t easy; there are indeed some mad bills to pay. 💵

MAD BILLS TO PAY, which premiered at the 2025 SFFILM Festival, follows a 19-year-old Dominican American in the Bronx navigating the slow, unglamorous journey to adulthood.

Catch it at the Roxie starting May 7 with director Joel Alfonso Vargas in person!
