This Indigenous Peoples Day, we’re recognizing the leadership of Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities and the broad public support for Tribal-led conservation and homeland restoration.

New national polling from Trust for Public Land and YouGov finds:

🌿 77% agree that Native American Tribes have an important role in stewarding natural resources on their homelands to protect the long-term health of the land.

🌿 58% support voluntary efforts by willing government or private landowners to return homelands to Native American Tribes.

🌿 61% support increasing federal conservation funding for Tribal Nations, including allowing Tribes to apply directly for existing programs.

Across the country, TPL works alongside Tribal Nations to return homelands, protect culturally and ecologically important places, and advance conservation priorities defined by their own communities.

Together, this work has helped protect or transfer nearly 200,000 acres back into Tribal ownership.

Indigenous-led conservation can take many forms and happen at many scales. Each project begins with the priorities of the Tribal Nation and reflects the cultural, ecological, and community significance of the place.

"Every morning starts the same way: happy chaos, leashes, and a park that's just a few minutes from our door. Watching Sunny and Maple run, play, and greet their favorite park friends is genuinely the best part of my day!

But here's the thing: not everyone has this. 1 in 3 people in the U.S. (over 100 million people) don't have a park within a 10-minute walk of home. believes that shouldn't be the case. Parks aren't just about nature; they're where we connect with our neighbors and feel part of our community.

Getting to walk to a park this easily isn't something I take for granted, and it's part of why I wanted to share our morning for National Walk To A Park Day."

Rock climbers, belay on! For decades, climbers have been sending routes at Arizona’s treasured Upper Sullivan’s Canyon, near Verde River Headwaters State Park. When the community rallied to protect this extraordinary basalt rock crag, we partnered with the Prescott Climbers Coalition and the Town of Chino Valley, AZ to help keep this beloved climbing area accessible for generations to come—all while preserving its ecological and cultural significance.

Congratulations to the Mi’kmaq Nation on the return on 83 acres of land known as Pugweliget, meaning “living together in a group”.

Trust for Public Land is proud to support the return of Pugweliget, which now creates opportunities for Tribal members to step out their back doors to walk, gather, hunt, fish, forage, and spend time on the land in ways that sustain Mi’kmaq traditions, language, and intergenerational knowledge.

Sliding into more recess time thanks to our partnership with Pittsburgh Public Schools and Rep. Summer Lee! Pittsburgh's Greenfield Elementary celebrated its recent opening of its new community schoolyard and the Revitalizing America's Schoolyards Act.

This bill would establish a grant program that would allow even more transformational work for playgrounds across the country!
