Together with New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA), we recently screened the adaptive recreation feature: Best Day Ever at the University of Hartford, followed by an inspiring panel featuring adaptive trailblazers Torsten Gross, Jon Sigworth, Scott Roderick, Mikayla Briere, and Berne Broudy.

The conversation explored how we can create trails where people of all abilities can enjoy the outdoors; including Connecticut's own Mono Pond State Park, which will boast the state's first adaptive trails as part of its new trail plan.

We’re excited to expand access and create more opportunities for everyone to connect with nature.🌲💚

Three Trust for Public Land projects have been recognized with 2026 L.L.Bean Community Awards! 🎉​

This year's award- winning TPL projects are helping communities thrive in different ways—from growing fresh food at a new community garden in Birmingham, AL, to transforming an asphalt schoolyard into a vibrant green space in Philadelphia, PA , and improving safe access to Salmon Creek Ravine in Burien, WA.​

Each reflects the power of community-driven solutions that make the outdoors more welcoming, accessible, and beneficial for everyone. ​

When people say community schoolyards are colorful, they're right—and that is also the least interesting thing about them! Here are a few facts you probably don't know about community schoolyards:

1. Community schoolyards designed to increase shade and green spaces can have an average “feels-like” temperature drop of 36 degrees.

2. Community schoolyards are created in close collaboration with students and schools to develop a space unique to how they learn and play outdoors.

3. Community schoolyards can be designed to absorb stormwater to prevent neighborhood flooding.

4. Community schoolyards create more park access where it’s needed most—such as neighborhoods with predominately communities of color, which have 44% less park space than white neighborhoods.

5. If all schoolyards were transformed and opened to the community after hours, 80 million people would have access to a new park within a 10-minute walk of home.

As communities across the country face longer and more intense wildfire seasons, conservation is proving to have benefits that reach far beyond preserving beautiful places.

Protected landscapes can support wildlife habitat, safeguard water resources, expand public access, and in some places, help slow the spread of wildfire.

The land surrounding the Hollywood Sign, Cahuenga Peak, offers one powerful example. Conserved years before devastating wildfires swept through Los Angeles, it helped create a natural buffer between wildfire-prone hillsides and nearby communities when people needed it most.

It's a reminder that protecting land is also an investment in healthier, more resilient communities.
