Kezar Triangle Volunteer Event This Saturday!
Want to help cut barley?
Join us TODAY Saturday, June 14th @ 2pm+!
It's not every day you get a chance to help scythe and transform a field of barley into a gift for the soil of San Francisco. Friends of Kezar Triangle together with San Francisco Rec & Parks Department would like to invite you to participate in the transformation from historically meaningful "crop" to its next phase as mulched soil and lupine at the Plot to Grow Art at the Kezar Triangle.
In case you haven't been to see the barley (an important historical crop for Golden Gate Park and the Triangle), today is your last time to see it this season! We hope to plant again next year and see how the soil has improved and harvest a full crop of seed to share then. So, sorry for the short notice but we decided just this past week and lined up the people and official blessings last night to be able to cut the barley quickly before it ripens.
Together, we will turn it into the ground as a gift to the Earth to improve the soil conditions for future crops. As to why, well, we noticed that the barley (a common cover crop) was growing very unevenly on the new soil (this was our first planting after the construction). An early green harvest will allow us to build up the soil naturally (no chemical fertilizers here) as well as honor the historical process used in the founding of Golden Gate Park. Our next temporary crop will be native lupine. :)
Where: Kezar Triangle, Corner of Frederick St. and Arguello Blvd. Plot to Grow Art is the circular area opposite the Kezar Stadium entrance.
When: TODAY - Saturday, June 14th, 2:00pm +
What to wear: closed-toed shoes, long pants, and layers
Join friends and neighbors to keep Kezar Triangle artful, fun, educational and full of life.
Tools will be provided courtesy of San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.
