AIDS Legal Referral Panel

AIDS Legal Referral Panel Advancing & protecting the rights, dignity, & health of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Bay Area.

Our mission is to advance and protect the rights, dignity, and health of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Bay Area. We accomplish this through direct legal representation by one of our Staff attorneys, by careful placement of clients with one of our 500 volunteer Panel attorneys, and by connecting our clients to non-legal service providers to secure other vital resources. Every year, we help tho

usands of clients stay in their homes, gain access to healthcare, become legal citizens, improve their finances, and connect to other community services. By addressing their legal problems, ALRP seeks to improve our clients’ health and well-being.

"I want you to know that this was not simply a legal matter for me. I genuinely do not think I could have survived being evicted. The prospect of losing my housing was awful, and you gave me a path through..."

We are proud to announce that four-time Olympic gold medal diver Greg Louganis will receive the 2026 Clint Hockenberry Leadership Award for his bravery and resilience in using his voice and visibility to combat the stigma, isolation, and hostility faced by people living with HIV and transform the public’s perception of the virus.

Named for ALRP’s first Executive Director, who led the organization from 1986 until his death from AIDS in 1992, the Hockenberry Award is given each year to an individual whose work reflects a lifetime of service to the HIV/AIDS community.

Last year, 40% of ALRP’s clients were over age 60. As the population of older adults served by ALRP grows, we are increasingly seeing them targeted for financial exploitation through scams ranging from Social Security and Medi-Cal impersonations to the type of high-pressure tactics our client Gerard experienced.

Last year, the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging reported that seniors over age 60 were disproportionately targeted and lost a staggering *$4.8 billion* to scams, which are becoming more widespread and more sophisticated.

ALRP’s client services team intervenes early when possible, reviewing payment notices that our clients have received and identifying whether they’re fraudulent. Other times, we advocate for clients like Gerard—helping them assert their rights against the bad actors that have violated them.

Yesterday, we gathered in Golden Gate Park with organizations from across the region for the 40th Anniversary of AIDS Walk - the largest and most visible HIV/AIDS fundraising event in Northern California.

We are so grateful to everyone who supported our team, the Legal Eagles, through their generous donations. This year, we were the #2 top fundraising team!

Now, we are only $2,200 away from our goal of $35,000. Can you help us cross the finish line?

Visit https://sf.aidswalk.net/alrp to donate.

Your support will enable our in-house legal staff and volunteer Panel attorneys to meet the pressing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS day in and day out.

Diego knew he had been granted immigration relief many years ago, but he no longer had the documentation to prove it. Through multiple strategies and attempts, ALRP Immigration Attorney Rafael Benzecry was able to confirm that Diego had been granted asylum in 1996--and get Diego the official documentation he needs to show proof of his immigration status moving forward.
