At HKBANC, we believe that investing in students today helps cultivate the leaders of tomorrow. Today, we're proud to spotlight Briana, a 2025 HKANC Scholarship recipient whose commitment to improving patients' vision and quality of life reflects the spirit of our scholarship program.

Reflecting on what receiving the HKANC Scholarship meant during her final year of optometry school, Briana shared:
"This scholarship would alleviate the financial stress of my last year of graduate school and allow me to focus on developing the expertise to better serve my patients and our community."

Since receiving the scholarship, Briana has completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at UC Berkeley's Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science after spending her final year completing clinical rotations across the country. These experiences allowed her to strengthen her diagnostic and patient care skills while preparing for a career dedicated to improving patients' vision and quality of life.

As she begins this exciting new chapter, Briana exemplifies the impact scholarship support can have—not only on students, but also on the communities they will go on to serve.

🎓 Scholar Spotlight | Meet Joanna

At HKBANC, we believe that investing in students today helps cultivate the leaders of tomorrow. Today, we're proud to spotlight Joanna, a 2025 HKANC Scholarship recipient whose passion for improving communities through architecture embodies the spirit of our scholarship program.

Reflecting on what receiving the HKANC Scholarship means to her, Joanna shared:
"I am deeply grateful to HKBANC for investing in my education and future. Their support has enabled me to pursue valuable learning experiences, expand my perspective, and continue working toward my goal of creating sustainable, inclusive, and community-centered architecture."

Now a rising junior at UC Berkeley, Joanna continues to pursue her passion for architecture while exploring how thoughtful design can improve the way people live, work, and connect within their communities.

One of the highlights of the past year was participating in a three-week study abroad program in Singapore focused on building sustainable cities. Through the program, she explored innovative approaches to urban planning, architecture, and sustainable infrastructure while gaining new perspectives on how thoughtful design can improve quality of life and create more resilient communities.

A particularly memorable experience was spending a full day studying Changi Airport, where she observed how architecture, infrastructure, and human-centered design come together to create an efficient and welcoming environment for millions of travelers. The experience further strengthened her passion for designing spaces that positively impact communities and public life.

Beyond the classroom, Joanna has remained actively involved with HKBANC by attending networking events, supporting community programs, and volunteering at scholarship activities. These experiences have allowed her to build meaningful relationships while giving back to the community that has invested in her success.

Reflecting on what receiving the HKANC Scholarship means to him, Justin shared:
"This award helps me take one step closer to a long-term goal I think about every day: to provide for my family and give my parents the opportunity to retire early after years of hard work and sacrifice. It feels like I'm honoring my parents for everything they've done for me."

Now entering his junior year at UC Berkeley, Justin recently declared a double major in Data Science and Economics after discovering a passion for applying data to solve real-world business challenges. | A special celebration with Dion Lim!

Last week, HKBANC had the honor of attending a special evening with Emmy Award-winning journalist and bestselling author Dion Lim to celebrate the launch of her newest book, Amplify! My Fight for Asian America.

Board members, members, and friends gathered at Harborview Restaurant & Bar for an inspiring evening of meaningful conversations and community connections, while also supporting efforts to expand access to the book through placing copies in public libraries serving Asian American and underserved communities across the country.

Through Amplify!, Dion chronicles the rise of anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic while highlighting the resilience, advocacy, and collective action that emerged in response. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the role storytelling plays in fostering understanding, amplifying underrepresented voices, and preserving important chapters of our shared history.

We are grateful to have been part of a gathering dedicated to community, dialogue, and ensuring these stories continue to be heard by future generations.

Swipe through for a few snapshots from the evening!
