You're Going to Die A Creatively Conscious Mortality Movement

You’re Going to Die [YG2D] began over a decade ago as a simple open mic held in the golden belly of a San Francisco apartment. After its very first occurrence, it promptly shifted into the community spaces of the city, filling local cafes & dark bars with the words & songs of community. And now, the event has grown into something far beyond its origins...

YG2D is a 501(c)3 nonprofit bringing diverse communities creatively into the conversation of death & dying, inspiring life by unabashedly sourcing our shared mortality...
..with a free creatively conscious mortality podcast, monthly sell-out live open mics, concerts, & workshops facilitating creatively conscious mortality space for community, a hospice program sending musicians to patients' bedsides, connecting & enlivening prison programming for community [inside & out], cancer patient workshops & bedside visits for healing through creative writing, & an organizational branch offering safe space for Black & Indigenous community, reparation-funded by non-Black/non-Indigenous contributions.

I think some of us often need reminders to keep doing what we’re doing, to remember why it matters - I know I do - especially when things get dark or hard or exhausting.

Needless to say, my conversation with Ada Limón Ada Limón, the sweetness, the laughter, the raw realness, her poetry put to producer Nick Jaina’s music, being at the heart of the matter, revisiting it all in our first episode of a new season of You’re Going to Die: The Podcast, is offering me that kind of reminder today...

“Grief often leaves us without words. When we do find words for what we have lost, there are very few spaces in society or our support networks where those words can be shared in all their complicated glory. I have found that the spaces kept me alive at the darkest points in my life are ones that made room not only for kindness and condolence, but also solidarity, irreverence, surprise, and synthesis in equal measure. You’re Going to Die provides such a space, and as a death care worker and musician, I am honored to be part of this ephemeral but very vital public commons of mourning.“
