Did you know? The Mission Bay Hub is open. ★

On August 6, SFUSD's Life Sciences Immersion campus got a forever home — 11,000+ square feet on the 4th floor of the brand-new Mission Bay School. A working life sciences lab. A patient care simulation space. A design and engineering studio. Open to every SFUSD high schooler, with 1,322 students served each year.

This is what happens when a whole city shows up for its students: one Hub student worked alongside UCSF oncology researchers. Another was placed in UCSF's nursing program with a clinical mentor. Another shadowed a dental clinic for weeks and started planning for graduate school.

"My background doesn't define me — it strengthens me to keep going."

Rehan Meftah is Spark's 2026 Youth Poet Laureate. She graduated from Galileo Academy this year, and when she stepped up to the mic at the Superintendent's 21st Century Scholarship Awards, she wasn't only reading a poem — she was doing the thing she loves most, in front of a room that came ready to listen.

Her voice was developed in partnership with 826 Valencia, which helps under-resourced SFUSD students build their writing and storytelling skills. Rehan found flash fiction, storytelling, and the poetry that became her signature in their workshops.

“My teachers are the sun. They lit my pathway.”

This is what partnership looks like: a young writer, a program that believed inher voice, and a community that showed up to hear it.

Pride weekend may be over, but the reason we march doesn't clock out on Monday.

As San Francisco's streets cleared this week, we got to sit with a piece of news that captures exactly why this city is worth celebrating. As first reported by the Bay Area Reporter, an anonymous donor has pledged $35,000 to grow SFUSD's Rainbow Clubs in the year ahead — LGBTQ-inclusive spaces in elementary schools where kids learn, early and for keeps, that they belong exactly as they are.

The clubs started in 2022 in just 12 schools. With earlier support from Spark SF, they've grown to 32. This new gift means more Pride Liaisons supported, more events possible, and more classrooms where every child feels seen.

The donor — an ally who asked to stay anonymous so the focus stays on the students — put it best: our city is "more colorful, more human, and more wonderful because it contains such multitudes."

Our president, Ginny Fang, framed the stakes: at a moment when SFUSD faces real pressure, showing up visibly for these kids is how we stand for the values San Francisco was built on.

Happy Pride! A $35,000 gift to keep SFUSD Rainbow Clubs shining with joy and inclusion. 🏳️‍🌈

This week, the Bay Area Reporter shared news we're proud to be part of: an anonymous donor has pledged $35,000 to sustain and grow SFUSD's Rainbow Clubs in the coming school year — LGBTQ-inclusive spaces in dozens of elementary schools where every student is welcomed exactly as they are.

The clubs began in 2022 in just 12 schools. With earlier support from Spark SF, they've grown to 32. This new gift means more Pride Liaisons supported, more events possible, and more rainbows.

The donor asked to stay anonymous so the focus stays where it belongs: on the students. In their words, our city is "more colorful, more human, and more wonderful" because it nurtures such rich diversity and community.

As our president Ginny Fang put it, this moment is about who we are as a city — and standing for the values San Francisco was built on. At Spark SF, that means serving the whole child, including the wellness and belonging that help every young person show up and thrive.

Middle school educators are already noticing the ripple effect on their school community: students who participated in Rainbow Clubs at their elementary schools arrive more confident, more empathetic, and more likely to advocate for their peers.

One woman's extraordinary life changed the lives of thousands of San Francisco students she never met.

Michiko Okazaki — a WWII survivor who believed deeply that society's most vulnerable children deserve access to quality education — left her entire estate to Spark SF Public Schools to benefit SFUSD's Students and Families Experiencing Homelessness (SAFEH) program.

Today, that legacy reaches over 3,200 students across all grade levels. In 2024–25, SAFEH students achieved a 93.4% promotion and graduation rate.

When the NBA came to San Francisco for the 2025 All-Star Game, our students got more than a front-row seat. 🏀✨

Spark worked with the Golden State Warriors and the NBA to bring NBA Cares to SFUSD schools across the city to deliver something lasting: a full gym renovation at Bret Harte Elementary in the Bayview.

At the dedication, Draymond Green said it best: a gym isn't just a gym. It's a place where kids dare to dream big and work hard to get there.

SFUSD students also joined the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Day at Moscone Center, where current and former NBA players ran basketball clinics built around the fundamentals and values of the game.

Because of you, students have spaces that tell them they matter. 💙

Every child deserves a place where they belong. 🌈

Spark's support helped expand SFUSD's Pride Liaisons & Rainbow Clubs program to 32 schools in 2024–25, up from just 12 when it launched in 2022.

These clubs are open to all students, fostering kindness, empathy, and community for every child. And the impact goes beyond the classroom:

"A student who hardly ever speaks gave a speech at our Pride event in front of the whole school, saying how important the freedom to be who you are is."

When students feel they belong, they thrive. 💛
