We’re a San Francisco Arts Commission/Grants for the Arts Grantee! 🎉
The Arts Commission and Grants for the Arts recently announced a combined investment in the arts totaling over $25 million, supporting nearly 400 local artists and arts organizations.
This investment will directly support CubaCaribe’s work over the next year to help us continue creating, connecting and contributing to San Francisco’s vibrant arts community.
We’re grateful for this investment in our organization and in the city’s vibrant arts and cultural ecosystem. Thank you, /GFTA, for supporting local artists and arts organizations!

Thank you to Sara Deseran of The San Francisco Standard for highlighting our Artistic Director, Ramon Ramos Alayo, and our Executive Director, Jamaica Itule, in this powerful article capturing the emotional toll and immense hardships facing Cuba and its artists today.

Beautifully written and deeply moving, this passage captures the weight Ramon and many other Cuban artists currently carry between their life as an artist and teacher in San Francisco and their role as a lifeline for loved ones back home.
“As Alayo pours shots of rum for everyone, a class tradition, there’s little sign that he’s living a double life. Tonight he is a teacher, teasing and giving side-eye and erupting in his big, baritone laugh. But back in Cuba, as the sole lifeline for his friends and family, his role is heavier. As his country’s economic and energy crisis deepens into widespread chaos and despair, Alayo is watching his homeland go dark in countless ways.”

The electricity lithium batteries Alayo bought through a Bay Area fundraiser were delivered by horse and carriage to San Luis. They will help with everything from refrigeration to cooking.

Descansa en paz, maestro Dominico.
He was our AD’s first dance teacher in Santiago and brought him to Havana’s La Ena to continue his training. He was an amazing teacher who shaped many generations, including many in the CubaCaribe community. Gracias por todo 🤍
