San Francisco Bee-Cause

San Francisco Bee-Cause We promote a mutually beneficial relationship with bees through education, demonstration and participatory learning opportunities.

For millennia, humans have had a relationship with honey bees. Many times, humans benefit at the expense of bees. We think bees and people can have a sustainable, mutually beneficial relationship. Urban environments, such as San Francisco's, provide ideal opportunities for people and bees to benefit one another. The goal of our Projects is to turn those opportunities into reality. To learn about those Projects, see "General Information" section.

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR OUR BEEKEEPING APPRENTICESHIP.

San Francisco Bee-Cause is now accepting applications for our upcoming 2026-2028 Two-Year Beekeeping Apprenticeship Program.

There is nothing like this Program anywhere in the U.S. to prepare caring, competent and confident beekeepers focused on honey bee health and well-being.

While participation in the Program is a big time investment over a two-year period, by the end of the second year, you will have the knowledge and experience necessary to be a full-fledged beekeeper and to keep a honey bee colony alive and healthy from one year to the next using ethical stewardship principles.

This Program offers a unique opportunity to learn beekeeping in a supportive collaborative learning environment; is affordable and rewarding; provides hands-on training; teaches science-based, ethical beekeeping; and allows you to make a positive impact on the world around you.

If you’ve ever thought you might want to take up beekeeping, check out the comprehensive description, read the testimonials and watch a short video about our Program. Then, if you can honestly make the two-year commitment, please apply as soon as possible, but no later than noon on February 6!

The oldest recorded evidence of honey collecting, found in the Cuevas de la Araña near Bicorp, Spain, is estimated to be between 8,000 to 10,000 years old. This Mesolithic cave painting depicts a person climbing to reach a wild bees' nest, with bees flying around and honeycombs visible, providing early documentation of human honey harvesting activities.

Have you ever noticed bees hanging together in a chain? ⛓Worker bees will use the small hooks on their legs to "hold hands" and form these bridges called festoons.

Festooning is a sign that the bees are building or repairing comb—creating a living “scaffolding” from which to do their work on the hive. (And admittedly, it's pretty adorable to witness.)

It is a bit daunting to try to follow the videos in real-time against the data being extracted from the videos and modeled. But once you watch it all a couple of times and get a hang of it all, it really is amazing to be able to understand what the bees are teaching and learning from one another through dance!

Scientists have discovered how honeybees can decipher dances by their hive mates that relay directions to food. The findings, published in Current Biology, reveal how, in the complete darkness of the hive, each bee uses its antennae to interpret the information communicated through the dances.
