On January 4, 2025, our own Okinawa Eisa Shima Daiko, 18 members strong, performed at the halftime show of the NBA Golden State Warriors in front of 18,000 spectators and was a proud moment for our group. It reaffirmed the importance of sharing and preserving our cultural heritage with the broader community. Watch their spectacular performance at the Chase Center’s Japanese Heritage Night!

***Online Japanese College Fair Fall 2024***

Many Japanese universities welcome all students who are currently studying outside of Japan.

They offer incentives such as entrance exams taken outside of Japan, English-only enrollment, scholarships, Fall Entrance, exchange programs with top universities in the world, and transferring systems from colleges.

Each participating university has a designated program for international students and will be providing the latest information for those who are interested in enrolling in 2025.

This in-person workshop is for people with at least one family member /ancestor (e.g., parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc.) from Okinawa, specifically welcoming people of all ages who don't know much about Japanese or Okinawan cultures, languages, and histories; people of multiple ancestries; and people who identify with multiple marginalized communities (in terms of ability, sexuality, gender, etc.).

Moderated by Jane H. Yamashiro, the goal of this workshop is for participants to have the space to think more critically and deeply about what their Okinawan heritage means to them. Participants will have time to reflect on their backgrounds, ask questions, share thoughts, and learn about the experiences and perspectives of others.

Organized by the Beyond the Fence Collective Hosted by J-Sei and sponsored by the Northern California Okinawa Kenjin-Kai.

FREE Outdoor Movie Screening of Okinawa Film ~ Jimami Tofu on AUGUST 16 @ 7:30PM

Central Park in Davis will host a FREE screening of the award-winning feature film "Jimami Tofu" using groundbreaking CINEWAV technology.

"Jimami Tofu," a heartwarming tale of food and romance that will transport you to Okinawa, winner of the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film at the 37th Hawaii International Film Festival, the movie was one of the longest running in Singapore cinema history.

CINEWAV is a revolutionary outdoor cinema phone app that allows you to: Watch on a big screen while listening through your phone on your favorite headphones/earbuds for an immersive cinematic experience.

The film and CINEWAV app were created by Davis' own Christian Lee (DHS '85, UCD '90) together with his filmmaking partner Jason Chan (they both wrote, directed, produced and are the co-founders of CINEWAV). As a Davis native, Lee is proud to share their film and technology to his hometown, and the pair will be flying in from Singapore to sponsor this free event, introduce the film and host an informal Q&A.

Audio tickets are limited to only 200 people, so be sure to secure your audio ticket. Bring your picnic mats, picnics, and lawn chairs, and enjoy a movie under the stars with your favorite headphones/earbuds.
