“Tried to hand them my pain/ they couldn’t carry it/ but it didn’t break me, it made me/ I re-authored my narrative”
These bars were written and spit, with unshakable conviction, during the final group of our first program at the Solano County Juvenile Hall last night
The young man who wrote them is potentially facing 25-life, for exactly what you would assume someone faces 25-life for
The traumatic impact, weight, and pain he carries are not something we even pretend to fully fathom
He shared with us that, as a result of going through our program, he is now clear and committed to earning his bachelors, masters, and then doctorate in psychology (he already earned his AA in the hall)
He expressed that he will do so in order to be best equipped to help future youth facing the challenges he faced avoid the traps laid out for them, and to help them effectively manage their trauma, so they don’t end up in the positions he did
And he shared he has been inspired by our program to use Hip Hop to help achieve these outcomes
This is just one story out of many from this incredible group
We don’t do this work to “save” or “fix” anyone.
But we do believe so deeply in the healing and transformative power of Hip Hop that we have made it our lives’ work
And when we see the kind of life changing impact it’s effective implantation can have…we are humbled by the recognition of the immensity of the spirit that is moving through the space
We write this…
in gratitude for the incredible young men in the group who had the courage to fully show up, share their vulnerability, and wring every drop out of what we offered
and deeply honored to be a part of something so much larger than ourselves.
May you all know peace in your mind and joy in your heart 🙏❤️🙏
Sincerely,
The Rhythmic Mind family
