From Dan, Erin, and their family:

“My wife Erin and I are proud to have called Potrero Hill home for the past 15+ years — and as the Hill is our home, Anchor Public Taps became our extra living room. We spent countless hours there - hanging out with friends, drinking Steam, eating Frank Grizzlies, and just enjoying the Anchor vibe. We basically raised our kids there (don’t judge!) and loved everything about the place.

But, of course, it’s not the place alone that was special, it’s the people. And the workers at Public Taps were some of the best people around. Always so welcoming, quick with a beer recommendation, and invested in ensuring everyone had a great time every time they visited Anchor.

Our family can’t wait until Anchor’s doors reopen and the Steam starts flowing again. And we’re truly looking forward to seeing the men & women of Anchor getting back to doing what they do best, making & serving great beer… and making so many special memories possible.

-Dan Berthiaume”

From Matthias Crawford:

"I love Anchor. It was my living room for 5 years: I met people who have become lifelong friends; I celebrated major life events; and, I mourned the loss of an incredible piece of San Francisco history.

I want Anchor back badly. But I want it back with a strong union contract that supports the careers of the employees who made this brand such an institution.

From Thomas Spindler:

"Hey to everyone at anchor union.

Me and my wife visited anchor and anchor taps on our honeymoon after a recommendation from another brewery in London (meantime). We were devastated to hear it had shut its doors.

We loved the beer and the history and the tour guide did a fantastic job. We tried so many different beers and so many were just delicious. I still have the bar runner I got and have now retired it to preserve it going forward.

We do hope to one day return to SF and especially anchor brewing.

Attached picture of myself excuse the sunburn.. I got stuck at Sausalito waiting for the ferry!"

Best wishes

From Jennifer Strong:

"Anchor Brewing is as iconic to San Francisco as the Golden Gate Bridge, the fog, and the cable cars clanging up the hill.

As a transplant to San Francisco now a resident for 25 years, I never felt more like a San Franciscan than when my morning commute took be over Potrero Hill past the Anchor factory with the smell of a fresh batch of beer brewing in the air.

On my first of many factory visits I was struck by the knowledge and passion for the company of everyone working there. Not just the wonderful tour guides but everyone that would stop in the hospitality area to talk will visitors to share their love of the brand, and it was evident that it was the workers that were keeping Fritz Maytag’s vision alive. I try to convey this passion to others, both locals and visitors whenever I can.

The new owner has the buildings and trademarks but his real score would be bringing back all the people that are so dedicated to keeping the Anchor magic alive."

From Meredith Hassett:

"Hey all!

Hope you are doing well :)

What started out as "working from home" in 2018 turned into a home over the 6 years I visited Anchor Public Taps. My roommate and I both had jobs back then that we didn't have to be in the office on Fridays, so we wanted to find a place with wifi and sun on a nice day. I ended up spending (almost) every Friday at Anchor Public Taps, befriending the kind people that worked there. Trivia on Tuesdays became a regular thing, and soon Anchor was a critical part of my world. I've celebrated everything from birthdays, friend's engagements, job loss and new jobs, sports victory, and sunny Sunday at Anchor and with many of the employees that quickly became friends. Spending the closing day with my friends at Anchor was a bittersweet moment. And now I have hope that one day soon, I will get to sip another cold one on that sunny patio with my friends. Cheers 🍻!"

From Vanessa Barajas:

"I remember getting out of work after a long ass day at Philz and checking in with my fellow team to ask them if they wanted a beer. One beer turned into two and then before we knew it we were buzzed and bonding about our lives. It was a spot where we would go and decompress. We ended up making friends with (Jorge & Kim) and all of the staff at Anchor. Whenever they needed some coffee we got them. Anchor was a safe place for me. It was the place that I made new friends when I moved to SF. It was also the place that held me when I was going through a hard time. The place where I came to mourn one of my breakups with friends. Ja### (my 8-year-old dog) spent some good times at Anchor too. I’ve shared with my wife how much this place meant to me and even brought her before they all closed. Anchor was a time and place where so much growth happened."

"Good evening,

You guys were asking for some stories about Anchor here is mine.

Last year me and my wife were in San Fransico for a holiday. Finally, I got to go to America's oldest brewery! I tried to go 3 times before never happened.. To make it more fun we went for a friend's bachelorette party. My wife called ahead and managed to arrange with a tour of the facilities including the cellars! We got all the inside scoops. And got to see everything We got to taste some of the great beers as fresh as they could possibly be. Right out of the vats! It was amazing and delicious. The enthusiasm of all the staff to show and tell us about Anchor just showed how proud they were of the brand. This made me a big fan of the beer. It makes me happy that this year I can return for the holidays to anchor steam beers."

From Jake Spund:

"Good afternoon,

I hope this email finds you well! I would like to start by sending positive vibes and solidarity with you guys fighting hard for the work place you love and respect. I have a very unique experience and connection to Anchor and would love to share my story.

As an eager and curious 21 year old, I worked at Anchor from May through September of 2014. This was in the last few months of Anchor being independently owned before the Sapporo buyout. I worked as a custodian who was taking over for the previous person who had being working the position for over 10 years and was retiring. It was a very difficult job for someone who had never done that type of work before but I did my very best to meet the high standards and expectations that were set by the company.

I proved myself and made it through the first few months and interacted with everyone in the brewery and made some good friends quickly. What I noticed immediately was the sheer amount of hard work and volume that would come out of that place. I left every shift exhausted from mopping, buffing, sweeping and cleaning all the floors, surfaces, furniture, stairways and restrooms. After a hard day of work, most of my coworkers and myself work gather in the taproom for a few glasses of the various, but still limited brews at the time to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

I unfortunately injured myself while lifting a heavy keg of beer while trying to clean and ended up throwing out my back. I was on workman’s compensation for a month or so, doing regular Physical Therapy at Concentra but ultimately was forced to resigned from my position. This was before the Union was formed, so the only way I knew how to protect myself was to hire a workman’s compensation lawyer, who helped me settle out with the company.... "

From Dru and Andy:

"Hello!

We live in Inner Sunset and I cannot express how excited we are that you all are coming back!

Decades ago, when I first visited San Francisco, I immediately fell in love with it. I'd visit as often as I could, and would learn more about The City every time I was there.

I was visiting from Kansas City, Mo., with my first husband when I first tasted your Christmas Ale. Oh. My. God.

I can't remember how we did it, but we ordered several cases. We left them outside the back door in the snow in KC to keep them chilled since there were so many cases!

My current husband and I FINALLY fulfilled my lifelong dream of moving to San Francisco three years ago.

One of the things atop our list was the Anchor Steam brewery tour. Little did we know the magnums of Christmas Ale we brought home might have been the last ever.

We were crushed. All that history – all that DELICIOUS history – gone.

But now – you're coming back! All the wonderful union members who brew and package this liquid history.

We hope to be the first ones to sign up for the holiday tour again.

Congrats and much love to you all!

Solidarity,

Ms. Dru Sefton and Mr. Andy Savoie

From Jessica Morton,

"We loved going to Public Taps. Everyone was welcoming, and it was such a relaxing atmosphere. We went at least twice a month, and one of the reasons we became regulars was because of Maya and her genuine kindness. She knew our order as soon as she saw us: “Christmas Ale and a porter?” It felt like we were being taken care of by a friend.

Once news of Anchor's closing broke, Maya handled an impossible situation with grace and professionalism. Every day, she and her coworkers pushed aside whatever shock and personal stress they were feeling to take care of their customers- and there were a lot of them! Maya was always smiling, and she helped us keep smiling, too (this photo proves it).

Maya and the other Anchor Union employees know the facility, the beer and the community. We miss them being a part of our lives!"

From and wanted to tag .ulukaya:

"About a year ago, when the news broke that Anchor Steam was closing because Sapporo felt it cost too much money, I mourned.

About a month ago, when news broke that Hamdi Ulukaya bought all of Anchor Steam, I was elated.

Anchor Steam has been more than my favorite beer. It has been a taste of home no matter where I find the signature anchor sitting on top of a pull. I’m a San Francisco native, and I love just about everything about my home.

Knowing that every drop of Anchor Steam was crafted, brewed, legged, bottled and shipped by a single brewery on Mariposa Street meant that I knew exactly what I was getting no matter where I bought a six-pack or had a glass filled.

The elation I felt a month ago was not just because I’ll see Anchor Steam on store shelves again. The beers of Anchor are more than just recipes and labels. I was elated because I was certain that same consistent taste of home would be back. And that will only happen with the return of Anchor’s union workers. They know Anchor’s beers inside and out, backwards and forwards.

My wife got me a tour of the brewery for Father’s Day several years ago. I had already been an Anchor fan for years before that. But touring the brewery revealed the dedication the union staff at Anchor has to delivering on Anchor’s legacy of America’s first craft brewery. Following the tour, we went to Public Taps for the first time. Public Taps instantly became my favorite place to go. That is not hyperbole. I celebrated my 40th birthday at Public Taps. There were always smiles behind the bar. There were always laughs filling the tap room or drifting above the garden.

I hope that Hamdi Ulukaya is dedicated to returning the community to Anchor Steam. It’s going to take more than warm bodies who know how to brew beer. Bring the union back to Mariposa and De Haro. I’m looking forward to seeing familiar faces behind the bar very soon."

From Dana Johnson:

"This picture was taken during the Craft Brewers Conference in the Spring of 2011 in Chinatown. I had made many trips to San Francisco by this point in my life. Years earlier, I got to know Fritz Maytag by becoming an allied trade member of the Brewers Association of America (BAA). Anchor Brewing was one of the members and l attended the final BAA meeting at Anchor in the Fall of 2003.

I was sad to hear about Anchor’s demise but am thrilled to hear that it will be back again. Anchor is an American Institution and no trip to San Francisco is complete without having at least one Anchor Steam Beer!"
