Yesterday I was privileged to speak during the Memorial Day Service at Monterey Cypress Post 694 in Marina, CA, where we honored and remembered the ordinary men and women who rose to the extraordinary through their sacrifice and service to our country. The Marina High School Choir lent their beautiful voices to patriotic songs and Scouts of America Troop 134 held a flag retirement ceremony. Talks were also given by Post 694 Commander George Glenny and Unit 694 President Janet Wohlgemuth. After the ceremony nearly 100 attendees enjoyed the full-on luncheon prepared and served by the 694 Legion Family. Thank you to all who participated and shared stories of their departed veterans

The Annual Memorial Day Ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 742 Auxiliary at Sunnyslope Cemetery in Corona, California, was a heartfelt and solemn tribute honoring the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Held at 10:30 a.m., the ceremony brought together veterans, families, community members, and local leaders in remembrance of America’s fallen heroes.

The ceremony was masterfully guided by Post Commander Ray Nieto, whose leadership and coordination ensured a meaningful and dignified program worthy of the occasion. The event opened with an invocation delivered by Auxiliary Chaplain Luci Ruiz, setting a reverent tone for the morning. Auxiliary Incoming President Jenison Carrizosa proudly led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moving rendition of the National Anthem performed by Brielle Alvarez and Makeyla Valle of the Devin Renee Music School.

Post Commander Ray Nieto then introduced the ceremony’s keynote speaker, Marine Corps veteran Marlene Linsalato. Her powerful remarks reflected upon her military service, the sacrifices endured by military families, and the emotional experience of performing military honors at Riverside National Cemetery. Her words served as a reminder that Memorial Day is not simply a holiday, but a sacred day of remembrance for those who gave their lives so that future generations may live in freedom.

Auxiliary President Veronica Verdasco welcomed MaryAnn Sherman of the Blue Star Mothers, who distributed Blue Star banners to attendees in honor of families with loved ones serving in the Armed Forces. The presentation symbolized the enduring bond between military service members and the families who stand beside them in support and sacrifice.

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony followed, with members of American Legion Post 742, American Legion Post 216, and Corona Elks Lodge #2045 presenting three wreaths at the cemetery’s war monument in honor of the fallen. The tribute continued as the American Legion Post 742 Honor Guard rendered three rifle volleys using historic M1 Garand rifles. As the haunting notes of TAPS echoed across the cemetery grounds, Marine Private First Class Christian Montenegro respectfully raised the American flag to full staff — a moving and unforgettable tribute to those who gave their lives in service to the United States of America.

The ceremony also featured patriotic musical performances of “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful” by members of the Devin Renee Music School, whose voices brought comfort, pride, and reflection to all in attendance.

The benediction was delivered by American Legion Post 216 Chaplain James Bowman Jr., offering prayers for the fallen, their families, and the continued strength of the nation they defended. Commander Ray Nieto concluded the ceremony by thanking all participants and attendees for helping preserve the true meaning of Memorial Day.

A special thank you was extended to the distinguished local officials and community leaders who attended the ceremony in support of America’s veterans and fallen service members, including Assemblywoman Leticia Castillo, Corona Mayor Jaques Casillas, City Officials Jim Steiner and Wes Speake.

May we never forget the courage, sacrifice, and devotion of those who laid down their lives for our country. Their legacy lives on through ceremonies such as this and in the grateful hearts of a free nation. By Raymond Boom

I have completed my National Poppy Day 5K with my Pups🙌🏼 The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. 🇺🇸

On the Friday before Memorial Day, May 22 this year, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform. Learn more about National Poppy Day: www.alaforveterans.org/National-Poppy-Day
